Gruntled Killed the Disgruntled Stars?

Is the D-SID Board dead? Very few posts, even fewer new threads by bloggers in recent months. One would think this would be the time to vent...

Well, the SID field is in good shape if SIDs want a positive place to post. The SID board is booming and the malcontents are slithering into the high grass.

Me thinks we need 'em both--just like the cheques and balances of the legislative, executive and judicial branch.

D-SID RIP?

Nope, we definitely need both. I've got a couple rants I am probably going to publish in the near future that can't be done under my actual name.

It served - and I'd like to think continues to serve - a purpose. But I am a fan - and member - of the new SID discussion board, so I hope that continues to thrive as well.

Keep in mind that most of us are in the midst of media guide season for the fall, trying to track down coaches for rosters and final (ha - "final") schedules.

Overall, this site is getting more hits/visitors than it use to. It averaged fewer than 100 per day before a couple months, when it went up to about 125 hits a weekday. Even had 141 yesterday.

America is about choice! Both sites will serve a different kind of user.

It's like a Starbucks moving down the street from the hippie coffee shop (you know the one I am talking about).

Both will survive.

Once YC was attacked, this board got its highest ratings ever...But not for good reasons. I think it angered a lot of people and ticked a lot of serious folks off.

With that said, a place to vent isn't such a bad thing. This board will become the NIT Tournament while the SID Board is March Madness.

I still enjoy this website ... it's a good place to vent.

however, I'm in the middle of media guide madness as well as gearing up for the fall sports season, and the SID Board is proving to be a good resource for help on technical issues and such.

that's all.

I think both the board and this blog serve a purpose. Here you can hide under the vail of anominity, and go off on the deep end on occassion. Which is fine, but the board has many useful functions, that fellow SID's can learn things. I for one learned about the new soccer rules, and would never know until our first game.

I am all for what is a peaceful co-existence. Phil Ticknor has done a great job and is to be commended. His site is a more organized and palatable feedback loop.

While shedding anonimity has already fostered a communal atmosphere, there will always be stuff we can't post there, lest we risk burning a student for the stupidity of his parents, or a bridge for future employment over a disagreement.

Being able to state exactly what you feel, without fear of reprecussion, is a nice freedom we will continue to offer. We'll still be here, sniping away at the BS, even if it is just the original six or seven of us who started this as a chance to vent in a joking manner, going back to entertaining just ourselves.

I kind of like the thought of being the hippy coffee shop, occasionally annoying the suits looking for their double lattes down the street.

I like the SID board, except for that one guy (who apparently isn't even an SID) who makes about 90 percent of the posts. Too bad half the stuff he mentions is wrong...

If it's the guy with the aquirrel for a logo I know what you mean. If he's not working in the business he shouldn't be posting there, IMO

Yeah, but he's engaged to a doctor and commands HUGE fess for his psuedo SI duties, and he will tell you so...

Well no wonder it seems like he is on that site 24/7.

Nothing gets my goat worse than people who leave a job and then try to tell everyone else how to do it. (In the TV world they are called "consultants")

You want to talk about your experiences, fine, but when you spout rules and procedures that aren't done that way anymore and you don't know that because you dont even work in the business..... that really disgruntles me. :)

I'm surprised there isn't a "report user" button/link on the site. Most web boards have them now.

At 10:57 AM, September 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What's wrong with consultants? Are you jealous that they make a gaggle of money? Maybe you’re bitter that most consultants work about three days a week.

And by the way...They call them consultants everywhere, not just in TV.

Don’t call someone out, and then proceed (almost on cue) to call out another profession. What makes this even better is that you clearing don’t know what a consultant does. Isn’t that what you were venting about in the first place?

If you don’t what someone does don’t use it to make fun of them. It just makes you look dumb.

If really don’t know what someone does, just ask. Don’t pretend like you do. I think a consultant would call that “poor form”.

I'd rather have job security, a social life and a soul rather than be a consultant.

Doesn't the saying go: Those who can, do, those who can't, teach. (or in this case consult)

And don't hate on Foamy the Squirrel. He would fit in on D-SID and would probably hate the consultant types.

I've gotta admit, both boards have their place. There are actually two people who irrate me beyond words on the SIDBoard, though. One is the person who has been referred to, and his desire to tell us how do everything. He does have some interesting comments, but he's taken on some "projects" that seem a little odd to me (see the AVCA thread).

The other one is that weasel GA from the northwest. He thinks he knows everything about publications, when in fact, I'm pretty sure he doesn't.

There...I've gotten in my anonymous rant (that I haven't done in a while).

At 8:35 AM, September 12, 2006, Blogger Some SID Type Dude said...

Yeah, that northwest GA thinks he knows it all, but it kind of makes you wonder why he is a GA at a DII school instead of working at a print shop if he knows so much about the printing process?

I'm also disturbed that the Volleyball Stat Crew questions subject is the biggest one on there. IT'S VOLLEYBALL...

At 9:46 AM, September 12, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree about the Volleyball Stat Crew thread ... I keep checking it cuz it's high comedy to see folks debate the quirks of it. It's nuts.

At 10:42 AM, September 12, 2006, Blogger Some SID Type Dude said...

Oh yeah, don't forget the golf stats thread. That one is high comedy too...am I the only SID in America who just takes the results from golf, puts them in a binder, posts them to the web and forgets about them? Where do these people get all this time to get all worked up about college golf?

At 11:34 AM, September 12, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I hear ya ... and that's if my coach bothers to give me the golf stats (you know, depending if the do well or not ... LOL)

What about Stillco? Hey, how about you do your job and not lecture on the quirks of stat crew.

What amazes me is some of the people on there who are posting throughout the day? I mean I might go on once and look, but its like these people are on there all the time. They must have cushy SID jobs or something...

At 6:27 PM, September 12, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Come on, there aren't more important things to gripe about in the SID world than the posting habits of users of another web site?

"What amazes me is some of the people on there who are posting throughout the day?"

I agree with that statement. I've made it a point to not even open the page in the office. The only time I spend there is when I'm home just relaxing...on the rare occasion that actually happens.

Guys there's something pretty good stuff going on on the SID Board. I've been able to post questions on software applications--for example-- and get pretty quick responses. There's not guilt involved if I'm getting tips to do my job better.

At 10:31 PM, September 16, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Attacking others on the SID Board who are not posting anonymously is really cheap. If you want to attack someone, don't do it anonymously. That's cowardly.

Some of us former SIDs (and maybe SIDs again down the road [can't rule out anything!]) appreciate this site to stay in touch with the field. This has been my first venture over here since May, and I enjoyed catching up on the hot-button issues. I don't want to join the board, because it doesn't seem relevant to an outsider, but it's good to have a pulse.

Let the good times roll!
