SID Profession Case Studies
OK, time for a new thread before the nerd SIDs start slashing the boozing athletic communicators with their pocket protectors. So perhaps YC talk will be history, for a while anyway. It just would not be right for that thread to be the most popular in Dis-SID history...
At times we all yearn for greener pastures, but then again we are grateful for our jobs in athletics and communications. The idea for this new topic is to offer examples of certain individuals’ (whose names will be changed to protect the employed) experiences in the profession.
While the blog gets bashed for anonymity, I really think we can see how the other half lives and maybe get some clarity with this scholarly case study. So let’s offer some case studies—you or friends who have worked or are working in the field—on their quality of life, etc.
Let me present to you Ziggy Semicolon. He worked at a lower level NCAA DI institution. Zig brought stability to a shop that had seen a lot of turnover. Yet you know the drill: he was over-worked, underpaid, and needed more help that the one GA. He burnt out after a few years.
Mr. Semicolon applied for a got a job at a smaller school in the public information office. He makes about the same money, is not the head of the department, and works 9 to 5. With a young family the change seems to suit him.
It should be noted, however, that Mr. Semicolon is NOT a sports junkie. It was easier for him than for perhaps most of us to leave sports information. In summary, Ziggy seems to have made the right choice for him and family.

I was SID at a mid-major D1 school. With a new baby in the family, we needed to relocate to be closer to grandparents. I took a newly-created position as SID at a juco and made more money than at the D1.
With another baby on the way, I'm getting out of the sports information business to teach college journalism. The pay is even better, but having those nights, weekends and holidays at home is the main reason for the move. And I'm friends with my school's SID so I can keep my hand in athletics, but only when I choose to.
I love sports and this profession. But sometimes I do feel overworked, underappreciated and underpaid.
I applied for a job closer to home at a bigger school but ended up as a finalist and not getting the gig.
I like it where I am now, but I can't image working as hard as I am now for another 5-10 years at the same place. I'll burn out before that - which I almost did this past year because we were understaffed.
I don't have children yet but when I do, if I found a better situation or another job outside the profession that paid more and gave me more time at home, I may be inclined to take it.
I left the profession five years ago. I can’t tell you what a difference it has made in my life! I still work in higher education; I think I could bring some good perspective.
First the money, it is hard for me to believe that I worked for those slave wages for so many years. Don’t think so? Just check out the salary listings in the Chronicle of Higher Education when they come out. SIDs (on average) are some of the lowest paid staffers at colleges and universities.
Second, the time. I can use my sick days. I don’t worry about the office if I have a bad cold in the dead of winter, I just stay home. There is a mutual respect in my new profession, and around campus.
There has been one downside, the people. SIDs are generally nice people, and we work with each other a lot. I currently work in advancement, and have NO interaction with folks from other schools. That is a big change.
Looking back, this was profession that I fell into in my 20s and was great, but in the long run (for myself) I don’t miss it a bit, especially when I leave everyday at five, collect double the money in my paycheck, and work in a pleasant environment.
Can someone please explain to me why SIDs are among the lowest paid staffers at virtually any college? I mean, I understand the whole supply/demand thing, and how there are a ton of talented people looking to break into the profession, yet aren't there a ton of talented professionals in any field, yet I don't see any school saying "You know, let's pay our basketball coach $25,000 because there are 100 people who would kill to have that job." I would like to think that what we do on our campuses is important, yet whenever I ask for a raise the attitude seems to be "well someone will do your job for what we pay you." Never mind they don't have my experience, my contacts or my knowledge of the school's athletic program, but someone will "fill the chair" for what I make is basically what it boils down to. Why is sports info the only area on a campus that has this attitude?
Unfortunately, yes. I got out of the college field because the hours were too crazy, some of the SIDs in my conference were...less than talented at what they did, and I couldn't have a life outside the office.
Until SIDs come up with someway to get our message across that we are overworked, underpaid and burning out, it won't change. CoSIDA needs to take a stand and help out its membership at the small schools.
Allow me to add this to the conversation. I have been counseling folks to get out of sports info for years. I was in the business for three years, and was at a cross-road. I looked at a lot of the lifers in the business, and realized that most were single, divorced, or just miserable. I saw that I did not want that. So I took a chance and got out, and went to work for a company that serviced the business. I cut my hours in half and doubled my salary. It actually worked.
I bring this up because with the skills SID's have, you can work in PR, the media, corporate communications, advertising, marketing firms, etc.
Look at how many jobs were open this year, and how there are not enough able bodies to fill all the positions. At a certain point, upper administration will start to realize that their demand for young new talent is not there, and that salaries and benefit packages must start to increase, or they will not be able to attract good talent.
Getting out of the business does not mean abandoning college athletics. Remembering that this is your job, not who you are, you can still be involved. Personally, I work games for local schools doing stats or whatever is needed game days. It keeps me involved, and I get to see people. Yet, when the game is over, I head home, not back to the office.
Just because this worked for me does not mean it will work for everyone. But, then again if I did it, it can’t be too tough. Sometimes, you just have to take a chance.

As long as SID's are WILLING to take a crappy salary and work an 80 hour week, the salaries will stay low. Start fighting for yourselves - and stop selling yourselves short. Power to the people!
I understand that many of us accept crappy-paying jobs just to get into the field. My point is, aren't there a lot of basketball coaches, football coaches etc. who would take a head coaching job for no money just to say they are the head coach and get the experience? Yet, you don't see the majority of schools with the attitude of "well, if this coach who has a 75-9 record over the last three seasons goes, we can just hire someone else for no money." No, for the most part schools pay coaches what they are worth (or more). It's hard for a SID to be paid what they are worth when their only choices are crappy paying job A and crappy paying job B.

In some respects, we knew what we were getting into with the pay in becoming SIDs.
In essence, we are sports journalists—a woefully underpaid lot. From what I know, we seem to do better than the local scribe.
On the other hand, we do public relations, too. There are a lot of folks making some good coin in this trade.
For example, our public information officer was earning more in her semi-retirement (20 hours/week) than I was in my full time (putting the hours in would only add frustration).
This was a humbling experience. (FYI: My pay is average, according to that salary survey done last year.)
We wear many more hats than these institution PR types. We put out more copy (probably 3 to 1), have more technical skills, software skills, and have less help.
I will give them that perhaps they need to, on a surface level, be more professional in dress and demeanor in dealing with the various board of director types, etc.
When our PIO job came open, I put out a feeler to a higher-up at our small university. I was told that I would not be considered at this time. While I received extremely positive feedback for the job I do in athletic communications in this rejection memo, that discouraged me for a number of reasons.
-That told me that there was really no room for advancement at our institution. Because I have no interest in being an AD, this was maybe my only advancement opportunity. While I am not presumptuous enough to assume a quid-pro-quo for such a transition-- as a dedicated employee--I deserved at least the lip service of an interview.
-At our school, it seems that there’s a lot of promotion from within in non-athletic administrative positions. Perhaps we are penalized since we live on an island in athletics, and don’t continually interface with theses folks.
The recent events certainly opened my eyes a bit. I’m looking at other positions more, but still continuing to enjoy and do the best in my job.
My gut tells me that we are not getting what we deserve.
But--I'm forced to ask--if we do such great things, why isn’t private industry recruiting more heavily for positions with their firms?

The answer to your last question is not a simple one, but I'll give it my best shot.
I believe one major problem is the awareness/perception of Sports Information professionals. I sort of cringed when you stated that we are "in essence ... sports journalists." The varied skill set required from the modern SID, especially at schools where you're doing pubs, graphics, writing, web site, etc., all in house, makes us more than a journalist OR a PR professional. I think there is a lack of awareness in both education and private industry about the rapidly evolving nature of our profession and, therefore, a failure to recognize the value of our skillsets - not to mention our time management and multi-tasking skills!
I honestly think my skills match up better with a web content editor or publication designer than with a journalist. Most potential employers, however, probably would not see it that way.

I guess a better way to put it is that most/many of us have *foundation* as sports journalists. I'd argue that this training is invaluable to do our jobs properly.
Yes, we do many things. I certainly did not mean to de-emphasize any of the other important skills required.

I think you have a valid point. At our foundation, we are all sports journalists. I think it is safe to say that we are all in the business because, at one point or another, we wanted to be a sports writer and/or broadcaster. I fall into that group.
But, as one professor at my school often says, I am a "jack of all trades and a master of none" (I disagree with the last part). We are indeed writers first and foremost, but we are also publication designers, publicists, webmasters, statisticans, game management coordinators, scorers, public address announcers, etc.
I think a lot of the perception problems with SIDs is the fact that while we are experts on promoting others, we are horrible about promoting ourselves. This is a very common trait among the brethren.
I have found ways to promote my own cause in a tasteful way, and it has helped. Some hints...
1. Get on campus, meet key people, shake some hands, talk with them about the athletic department and about what they do. Chances are they won't forget who you are.
2. Get involved on campus. Yes, it takes more time, but volunteer for a campus committee or get involved with a student activity or service project.
3. Most campuses have a faculty & staff notes section in either their alumni magazine or on-campus newsletter to promote accomplishments. This is a great place to list anytime you have worked at an outside event (NCAA regional, high school state tournament, etc.) or make a presentation (such as a table topic or panel at CoSIDA or ECAC-SIDA).
4. If you are lucky enough to win an award, write a release and distribute it. If you win a CoSIDA publication or writing award, a coaches association award (like AVCA, NSCAA, etc.), a major CoSIDA award, etc., no one is going to write a release for you. Write it, however, and people will notice.
I have done all four, and I believe that I have been able to increase my salary and other people's understanding of the job, both within and outside of the athletic department. Yes, it takes some of our valuable time, but it is worth it to improve some of those things we continue to complain about.
