Let's Talk About CoSIDA
Let’s talk about CoSIDA.
Is the 400-pound gorilla in the room our professional organization?
I know what I have done for CoSIDA. I initially paid my dues in order to nominate athletes. Because of the ingrained SID character flaw, I ended up taking on additional duties as if there isn’t enough to do around here. I serve on what I believe to be one of the more critical and difficult committees. I attended most of the convention in Philly. I uphold the Code of Ethics and read my magazine.
What has CoSIDA done for me?
I’ve filled out the survey. The results were about what I expected. My world went unchanged.
Why doesn’t our professional organization advocate on our behalf?
Hell, we dedicate our lives to advocating for others. A group of professional advocators should know how to do it on their own behalf.
Why are we DIII SID types relegated to an anonymous blog to have our voices heard?
I suppose the culture of the old guard is partly responsible. I hate listening to the old SIDs who brag about how much they have to do as if being overworked is an honor instead of unfortunate….
“My lacrosse and softball teams play at home today, and both of my basketball teams are in the NCAA Tournament tonight including one at home. I have five swimmers, three wrestlers, and two track athletes getting ready for nationals. My baseball and women’s lacrosse team are on the road and my only student worker was sneezed on by a sick chicken last week and he called in this morning saying something about having a bloody cough. I got here at 3:40 this morning, and I should be out by 3:40 tomorrow morning,” says Old SID A proud of how much he can handle.
“Yeah, I’ve got all of that, plus four gymnasts and two ice hockey teams still playng. Plus, my #1 singles tennis player got arrested for selling crack to an undercover police officer in front of a TV camera that was here doing a story on our drug free campus,” replies Old SID B in a stupid game of one-upsmanship that I have heard far too often.
To have that conversation in any manner than one person COMPLAINING to another should be criminal. What psychological pathology makes someone think that if they spend a minute not working, they are a better SID?
Its kind of like that old SNL skit where Billy Crystal is talking about drilling a hole in his toe and filling it with rubbing alcohol. I hate when that happens. But these guys are f#*king serious.
I am taking things the other way.
My IM away messages now say things like:
- Playing golf.
- Spending time with my wife.
- Letting my dog sniff my hand to see if he still remembers me.
Why is their no CoSIDA Committee on best labor practices? Why aren’t guidelines being drawn as a baseline for a sport to SID ratio? For a sport to pay ratio? For competition blackout days Why isn’t this non-existent committee preparing a campaign to educate AD’s, HR personnel, and others up the food chain about the role we play? About limiting the scope of tasks in the famous clause: Other/Various tasks as assigned by the AD (which is where about 90 percent of my actual work in my three-page job description lies).
So here is what I am doing. After I am done with my committee work for this year, I am done being on any CoSIDA committees. I will remain done until CoSIDA begins to advocate on our behalf. Starting a committee dedicated to our rights as humans and workers would be a nice step. That’s a committee I want in on, and will gladly sign-up for.
I know there are other factors at play as to why this isn’t a priority, and I know some of my fellow bloggers have been at this longer than me. Help me out, what are they?
No one besides us is going to stick up for us? I thank all of my fellow posters for giving us a voice.

You are right on the money about CoSIDA. The convention usually ends up as how many times can a person look at your ID tag and quickly move away when they see who you are.
This post is on the money. All the old-school SIDs think that if you arent working until 9 seven days a week you arent a real SID. How do I get the ability to post to this blog?
Wow, I have so many thoughts in my head, I don't know where to begin.. Typical for many of us I'm sure..
Anyway, I read some great points in this blog.. I can't even remember how many stupid surveys I have filled out since I've been an SID.. All the damn research in the world is not going to magically change the outcomes. I didn't even really understand some of the results of the last one. So it appears that at least 85 percent of DIII SID's are greatly underpaid and work a signicantly longer work week than most people.
This has always been a difficult and often thankless job. I would find it hard to believe that there are many professions that have evolved and continue to evolve faster than ours. Obviously computer technology would be one. However, as it evolves, as do we...
Technology is a blessing in disquise. Oh wait, that's actually evil disquised as a blessing. sorry. I may stop trying to write grammitically correct soon, b/c i do that enough in my life.. I love statistically software. I think it's amazing. But now, the student help I do actually still have is somewhat limited to what they can do sometimes.
Now, not only do you have to have knowledge of the sport, you need to understand statcrew. Which is not hard, but if someone's going in-game for basketball, you better know what you're doing.
But that's only one small part of it. I mean over the past 5 years alone I honestly believe I have learned and acquired the knowledge and additional workload to justify almost doubling my salary. I know for a fact I deserve at least 10-15 THOUSAND more. I know that because there are coaches with the same experience and less responsibility than me that make that. And the worst part is.. On top of that I still need help. So, how do I ask for that. Yes boss, I need a 15k raise, and can you throw in an assistant. how about an intern for 5-10 grand. Of course, for that we still might not be competitive with other school's intern opportunities, but at least we'll get a body in here.
I may expand on this in a separate post, but this occured to me the other day... It's so important these days, that not only can you do the job, but that you have a master's degree. I have one, but it probably hasn't affected my ability to do this job...at all really.
I wonder how many SID's have doctorates. That's a survey for you. And this is the point I was heading to. I'm fairly confident that I deserve to be a doctor of sports information. And there are a ton of people more deserving than myself.
But I say, if you do this job for X-number of years, and can prove yourself proficient in X-number of sports, and add some other criteria in there..That we should be able to qualify for a degree.
I mean faculty do research and are published, and earn doctorates. I do research, I'm published, and I could probably be considered an expert in over 25 sports. I can't imagine trying to pursue a degree. Even in athletic administration. I feel as though I have "paid my dues" and gained the knowledge, background and experience to deserve that recognition. Heck, I did an internship.. Let me take my boards and become a doctor ;)
I agree we really need more support from above to create a better working environment. You wouldn't get away with this in very many other industries. Why are we exempt from fair labor practices. It's not like it's a handful of people that are just lazy, or having issues, or just can't do the job. It's the majority. So why do we have to feel like we're whining when we bring it up. And ya know...How come just because we have chosen, and have the ABILITY to work in the sports industry, does that make it ok for us to have to work an unreasonable amont of hours..
ok, i'm done for now..
I agree that CoSIDA should be advocating for you guys regarding working conditions. I was not at all surprised to read the comments in the D-III survey in July regarding this topic, nor was I surprised by the salary information quoted therein.
Anything we can do to help in this regard is probably minimal, but we're willing to try.
At my school, we have three full-time trainers, and if god forbid they have to cover a night practice or work like 45 hours instead of 40, they whine like little babies. Meanwhile, I am the lone SID at a school with football and no one cares. Plus they do NOTHING all summer while I get ready for the fall and get ahead for the winter.
The overwork issue isn't D-III's alone. My experience is that it's equally prevaliant at the D-II and NAIA levels. A guess is that most folks in D-I shops outside of the BCS-type leagues face many of the same obstacles. Maybe, the CoSIDA convention or whole organization should split along the lines that the Academic A-A teams are broken down into.
Amen to the blogger that compared us to the trainers. The AT's say its a safety issue, but its a quality of life issue first and that's where we miss out.
I think all of these SIDs who try and one-up each other concerning their workload have just forgotten what its like not to work 70 hours a week.
There has to be a better way.
Wow, I just discovered this site/blog. What a great venue for letting off steam and hopefully getting the ball rolling to having serious changes be made to the SID profession. As for me, it's too late since I finally couldn't take it anymore and "retired" a few months ago at the ripe old age of 38!
Unionizing, institutional rules, and hell - just some good old fashioned common sense - need to be implemented. The sports info profession is a great career in terms of getting to work in a field that is fun, exciting and rewarding, and one in which friends and family are envious. However the criminally long hours and the "jack of all trades" requirement has forced too many talented people out of the profession. Someone please step forward and organize a truly meaningful CoSIDA committee to make REAL changes. Although I despise "unions" and their sometimes lazy attitudes and work ethic, having SIDs unionize may not be such a bad idea.
Maybe someday, after I've actually gotten to watch some of my own children's games (for which I have missed way too many) and reintroduced myself to my spouse (who I feel I don't even know anymore), I will reenter the SID profession reinvigorated knowing that real changes have been made.
Of course, I would like to do anything possible to help the current SID's plight.
I am a former SID who was lucky enough to wander into higher education advancement work.
There are times I miss the days, but more often I don't. In my new profession, people treat me with professional respect. I mean in the non-SID world on one makes completely unrealistic demands, it's just not good professional behavior.
I make real money, I work 9-5, I am able to use my vacation days (during the academic year, even)!
I do miss the actual games, but I attend events regularly. I watch our SID running around like a crazy person, and I don't regret my decision for a moment.
I did make lifelong friends in the profession. I did meet truly brilliant people who were grossly under compensated.
I really feel like I have gotten my life back. It's the best decision I ever made!
as a DIII broadcaster for the past three years, my announcing partner and I have run across about 35-40 SID's and the one constant is that they always have a seemingly endless line of people who want crap from then. Consequently, I have developed a system of bugging any student assistant to the SID's into getting me what I need for all Basketball, football and even volleyball games that I cover. The SID's consequently love my partner and I as they typically tell us that most other broadcasters treat them like garbage and expect the world. I have always thought that an SID at a DIII school must be one of the toughest and unrewarding jobs in the business, and after three plus years of being around you all, I know it to be true.
With that said, thanks for the hard work and if you ever have a real nice 20-something young man come across your way to broadcast a game, I'll be one of the few people who treats you hardworking people with respect.
Thanks for the hard work.
Interesting blog. I was an SID for 10 years and now work in media relations. Making the move meant more money and fewer hours. People ask me if I miss being SID and I do miss some aspects of it, especially the relationships with student-athletes and coaches. But the hours and the demands? Don't miss those too much.
Our current SID reports to me and he does an amazing job. I also encourage him to take time off, give duties to his students, etc - anything he can do to lighten his workload. It's sometimes easier said than done though. Also, the internet is a double-edged sword. Email saves a lot of time (I used to take rosters over the phone for home game programs more often than not) but the demands of the web (especially when people compare our D3 site to the local D1 site) and of parents more than outweigh that.
Anyhow, hang in there SIDs. I plan to keep reading this site and keep thinking about ways to make life easier for our SID. Thanks for the food for thought!
My name is Pete Moore. I am the associate director of athletic communications at Syracuse. I have served on the CoSIDA Board as a college division representative, an at-large representative, and in the officer rotation. I've been an SID at the small college level for 16 years and at Division I for seven-plus years.
I'm intrigued by the site, the name of the site, and the many posts on it. I'm sure there is some theraputic value in being able to pen some of the frustrations many of us share in our profession.
I would encourage any of the disgruntled SIDs to reach out and express these ideas to CoSIDA board members or other colleagues and try to come up with actual solutions. In the time I've been a CoSIDA member (since 1982)I have worked hard to try and increase the voice of the college division SID. I'm certainly not responsible for this but the evidence is clear that board representation for CD reps has increased dramatically. CD folks have taken a very active role in CoSIDA from their seats on the board.
I'd encourage any and all of the "posters" on this blog to contact a CD person on the board (Eric McDowell at Union, Tom DiCamillo at West Chester, Blake Timm at Pacific, Bill Wagner at Depauw, Chuck Sadowski at New Haven or April Emory at Elizabeth City State) and make suggestions. Truth be told, at least since I've been associated with the board, we have always tried very hard to find ways to engage more of the membership and increase involvement.
There are many items in these posts that I would like to respond to but I'm not sure if that would be productive. For example, the "old SIDS who brag about how much they have to do -- " I have not encountered that, rather I've found the workshop to be a great place to gather with other professionals who have similar challenges -- everyone in our business has a lot to do.
The suggestion of a committee on best labor practices is worth persuing. Perhaps some of the folks on this blog can put together a possible to have the committee added.
I just got off a board call in which we talked about three SIDs who recently left their jobs or were fired -- if there was a way CoSIDA could counteract those happenings, the board would be anxious to hear about it. Phone calls have been made, letters have been written but it always comes down to the fact that an institution is responsible employing individuals and there is very little CoSIDA can do to affect that.
The board developed a brochure that explains the benefits of having an SID and the role an SID can play. Over the years, as the brochure has been updated, it has been distributed to CoSIDA members, one year we sent it to AD's, it's been on the website. Still, we all know there is much progress to be made.
I'd be glad to hear from anyone who has questions or suggestions. It's disappointing that "disgruntledsid" is now a website. I don't have all the answers -- probably only a few -- but I'd be glad to listen and try to help.

My name is Blake Timm, and I am one of the current College Division representatives on the CoSIDA Board.
As Pete Moore stated, we as CD reps have been working to do what we can to better the situation for Division II, Division III and NAIA SID's. That is where the salary and job responsibility survey I compiled came from, comments from other Division III SID's who felt that it would help their cause. I am sorry that it has not worked for some people. I hope to someday hear from someone for whom it was helpful.
As the longtime SID at Pacific University (Oregon, not the DI school in California) , I deal with many of the same problems that are mentioned here: long hours, little help, additional duties added without adequate salry increase or budget support.
To bring about change, that change must begin with each and every one of YOU. First, you must advocate for yourself and your situation on your campus. It may or may not be successful, but that is where it starts.
Second, change in the organization must begin with you. Not participating in committees, for example, is counterproductive to your cause to better your job situation. Perhaps those of you who have posted comments along the lines of labor relations can start such a committee...I think the board would be very responsive.
Like with Pete, I am very open to hearing from anyone who has suggestions or questions about CoSIDA and the board. This is your organization.

sidwho...I personally contacted members of the Academic All-America Committee regarding the timeline for voting. Agreed, it is too tight. They will look at changes for the spring problems or, at the latest, for the 2006-07 programs.
If you have concerns about the Academic All-America program, I encourage you to contact the chairs and vice chairs of the program directly. Their names and contact information are available on the CoSIDA Web site under Academic All-America.

Thanks for responding. I'm glad to hear you have been able to solidify your position at your school in such a way that they would be worried about losing you.
To your point about disconnect between Division III members and the board (including CD reps on the board) -- because of the time commitment necessary and the need to attend the convention, you are correct that many of the CD reps who are selected come from solid work environments. However, and I know this from chairing the board nominating committee last year and being a member of the nominating committee for three years, there are not a lot of nominees to look at. People can't be selected for the board unless they are nominated -- and even then, some decline the opportunity.
Secondly, for a number of years now, a Division III and Division II meeting (two, separate) has been conducted at the annual workshop. It is a great venue for members to raise concerns and solutions. Since Division I hasn't had a similar get-together, I've been going to the Division III or II meeting so, as a board member, I can hear first-hand the issues at the small college level. Perhaps this might be a way for those who feel there is a "disconnect" to make their own needs known.
The low salary problems SIDs face is not new to the profession. I think some it is caused by the fact there are more people looking to get into the profession than there are jobs. Supply/demand and all that.
And, I also think that we need to do a better job selling ourselves to our schools -- proving to them that our value is more than just a stat-keeper. That is an ongoing challenge for CoSIDA and its members.
Again, I greatly appreciate the dialogue and hope it continues.
locustgrovesid,
Thank you for your thoughts. You are correct in that I am able to be on the board because of support within my department. My former AD and my current AD (who was the SID here back before the computer) have given me the support to serve.
That said, I think that characterizing those of us on the board as out of touch was issues is inaccurate. When I began at Pacific seven years ago, I was paid $20,000 and had a budget of $5,000, plus whatever ads I could sell. Since that time, I have convinced the powers that be to significantly increased my salary from "insulting" to "below average" and my budget better reflects the actual needs of what I do.
And there's still a long ways to go. My salary is still below not only the national average, but the average for my own conference. I still work 50-70 hours a week and while I have been told of help someday, I regard it as nothing more than lip service.
I have also watched as another school in our conference ax their 11-year veteran (who had brought in significant national publicty to their school), to replace them with a part time SID/crew coach who knew nothing about what she is doing. I also watch another conference school who continues to work with a 10 hr./week SID who is employed by the school's communications office. Its frustrating.
I don't think it matters how supportive your superiors are...we all face the same issues and the same problems. The difference, though, is how we deal with it.
If you think your school is holding on to you because you think the school is "too afraid to lose you," why not use that to your advantage? There are definite benefits to having a little bit of leverage.
locustgrovesid and sidwho:
I'm getting a real charge out of this on-line discussion. We've talked about trying to set up some kind of forum for www.cosida.com that would allow for these types of exchanges. Do you think that is a good idea? Our main problem would be that most forums/chat rooms need to be monitored and CoSIDA is not staffed to handle that.
Anyway, I'm pleased to read the discussion move a little bit away from blaming CoSIDA (which I know the two of you weren't directly) because, CoSIDA is really nothing more than its members. However, we do need to come up with some strategies to enpower the group. That has been a major issue since I first became a member in 1982.
On the few occasions I've had the opportunity to talk to the Division III and Division II meetings at the Convention (I was invited to speak the year I was first vice president and president) one of the points I tried to convey was the fact that small-college SIDs are really a special group. The skill level has to be broad because you are asked to do so many different things by so many different people. For that very reason, small-college SIDs are excellent candidates to move into Division I staffs, if they are interested. Don't get me wrong, there are tremendous benefits in both situations.
Sometimes I think there is a feeling among some CoSIDA members that the group is split into Division I SIDs and Division II and III SIDs. One of the reasons why we went away from split panels at the CoSIDA Convention (one university division panel against one college division panel) was we felt it was important to get everyone to feel equally qualified to sit in the same room.
Anyway, I'm an example of someone who had a great experience at the small-college level (12 years at Ithaca) and now I'm having a great experience at the Division I level (at Syracuse). The fact that I was at a Division III school didn't keep me from applying at Syracuse.
Any "disgruntled" SIDs on this blog who want to talk about moving from small college to Division I, or who want to hear the benefits of each, please feel free to contact me.
Pete is an exception to the rule--moving from a D3 school to a major DI University.
I'm not sure I'd want to give up some of the perks of D3--Spring season ending by May and traveling when I want to, for example--for DI life.
However, why don't D3 SIDs get a look for the DI jobs? Managing 15-20 sports effectively, web site design and updating, etc. are reasons that D3 SIDs deserve better.
I've applied for a few mid major jobs and not even gotten a look. The good news is that one job ended up paying 6K less than I'm making!
The comment about wanting young blood is valid. It seems like D3 head jobs or assistant positions at DI schools, want young professionals who will offer mega hours at low pay. It's supply and demand and there are a lot of folks who want it.
Yes, Pete is the exception. Major DI's rarely look at DII and III guys, in fact, they hardly even look at mid-major DI's. If you haven't worked or went to school at a BCS-level school, it's nearly impossible to get you foot in the door at that level. It seems like Big School A will take a 2004 graduate of Big School B over a DIII SID 9 times out of 10...

I may be a bit of an exception but I hope that doesn't stop anyone from trying. If you aspire to it, there are some steps you can take to position yourself that I would be happy to suggest.
I would add that I loved my situation at Ithaca and had absolutely no interest in moving to Division I for most of my time there. As has been pointed out, there are a number of advantages to both situations.
I know of many Division I Directors who specifically look to those in the college division when hiring because of the varied experience those professionals have.
--I've applied for a few mid major jobs and not even gotten a look. The good news is that one job ended up paying 6K less than I'm making!--
By choice, I moved from a mid-major DI school to a junior college back in my hometown (new baby in the so we wanted to be closer to our parents), and I actually make a little more than I did at the DI school. We have fewer sports so I spend less time at the job and am able to teach a couple of journalism classes at the large four-year school across town.
--Volunteer (boy, I hate that word in our profession) at DI NCAA or conference championship events.
I volunteered at the Final Four a couple of years ago. With travel, hotel, meals and parking, that was about a $1,000 volunteer gig. I can't do too many of those.
Some good stuff here, I enjoyed reading it.
I just want to point out though, that it is just not DIII or DII guys that have these problems.
I work in a DI office that has the exact same problems - too many hours a week, too many expectations and not enough pay, help or money in the budget to do what is needed.
I just don't want all DI people lumped in one group. Not every school is a BCS school at DI.
I too would like to post my thanks for this. I am at a low mid-major DI school, having made my way up from DIII. It can be done, and a lot of it is just making contact with the right people and being proactive.
That said, the grass is not always greener at the DI level, particularly at the non-BCS schools. We have 19 sports and just two full time employees, and our university administration has no desire to add staffing. Tomorrow will be the 16th straight day that both my assistant and I have worked, and we won't get a day off until next week.
Keep plugging away folks. Let people know your value.
by the way, you guys made the big time with a mention in the Cosida board minutes. I wouldn't be surprised to see an uptick in hits when the next digest comes out.
Wow, I go away for a few days...
First off, I appreciate that folks are reading and that there is dialogue taking place. I know the initial impetus for this web site was a place to vent and laugh at the common complaints we generally lodge amongst one another. To those of you who are friends of friends, it’s good to meet you, or at least kind of meet you. To my DI and DII colleagues who are also understaffed, it’s good to hear from you. We are as concerned for your rights as workers as much as we are our own.
Anyway, I appreciate folks from CoSIDA coming in. I really do. I am glad we have drawn attention, and in retrospect, I think we may have chosen an unfortunate name for our site. Frustrated SID may have worked better, but what link do you click on, Brad and Angelina Getting Freaky, or old widow knitting? Still, tying ourselves in with 1990's headline making mail carriers may not have been the best course of action.
That ship has sailed.
CoSIDA, consider us the feedback loop in the Shannon Weaver model. There is nothing personal here against anyone happy in their current position or otherwise, we just happen to be your membership’s poor, tired, huddled masses Thanks for lending an ear.
Other than serving on a committee, retiring to my office's inner sanctuary with the digest, and taking part in the AAA program, I have been largely detached from CoSIDA, not so much by choice though. As a young SID, I don’t feel like anything was ever done to draw me in. My first year, my boss said, “Join CoSIDA, you can write off your dues, and you need to be in it to nominate student athletes for Academic All-America.”
There was no welcome to CoSIDA mailer or pamphlet that said, “Welcome to CoSIDA, here is what we do, how you can help, who to talk to for this, that, and the other, here are the benefits, expectations and a golf shirt. Welcome, you are amongst friends.” Or maybe there was, and it got lost in the mail. Either way, you never made me feel needed or welcome, and I had plenty to do as it was.
Further, my travel budget is limited. By the time football season, basketball, and lacrosse wrap up, its exhausted. There isn't much left, especially not for a flight to say, Calgary.
I know it gets spread around, and when it came to Philly, I drove, stayed at a friends house, and attened what I could.
And I am sure many of the small left coast college types ran into my same jam I find myself in last year. So, if I can only attend once every three or four years, well, you know where I am going with this.
A lot of other solid points have been made regarding CoSIDA, and they need to be discussed. I won’t repeat them.
I do not claim to have all, or for that matter, any of the answers. I have been in this profession for five years, and I have attended about 3/4 of a convention. I do know that there is safety in numbers, and any port in a storm. I am proud that we have provided safe harbor.
Let me turn to the education pamphlet. I got mine, and the pat on the back felt good. Like when my preacher sermonizes to the choir. When I was done, I placed my copy in my AD's box. He knows how hard I work, but he hasn't a clue what I do. If he read it, he didn't absorb it.
What he would get, is if I didn't update the web site for three days, and forwarded all of the complaints to him. As my job description has not been updated since the day of stone and chisel, it does not include such crazy tasks as maintaining the web site. That portion of my job, like 95 percent of the things I do, comes under the dreaded clause E, other various tasks assigned by the AD. Personally, I don't know that I could do that. My athletes mean too much to me, and in the end, we all know that this job is about them.
That is at the heart of this whole issue. Our problems are not their fault. They are our own.
We have loved our jobs to the point that we as a group, have martyred ourselves in the athletes name, and the love of the athlete has been pointed to as a counter-argument for many of my fellow bloggers gripes. I will tell you plainly, that you may love your institutions athletes on a level equal to me, but your love and dedication will never surpass mine.
I am just willing to cry foul when the conditions placed on that love grow beyond reason. In the end, this is still a job, and we as workers still have rights. If you are willing to trade those rights to a life away from work, to be afforded the opportunity to live like the rest of the world, then you are suffering from an ism and need professional help. If you think you are a better SID than me because you are willing to sit there and take whatever is thrown at you, you are delusional, and again, in need of professional help.
If we keep willing to accept more in the name of this love, more will be placed on us, and in the end, the athlete will be the one who suffers. And we will suffer with them.
So, let me go a little Dr. Phil on you: Love should never hurt. I love my job, and so do the other posters invited to the blog. We are not complainers, we are doers who play the role of the salmon every day, even if when we are beat we do it begrudgingly. If you are comfortable in your situation, that’s fine. Many of us are not, and we have come together to make it better for us, and what is better for us, is ultimately better for you and the student-athlete.
If we are critical, it is only because we are tired. We persevere only because we love what we do.
I have it better than some of the posters, some of the posters have it better than me, but in the end, we are all in this together, and that is why this site is drawing attention. If I am given a full time assistant, I will be better off. I will personally be more comfortable. That does not erase my obligation to my colleague who does not have what I have.
I welcome a chat forum. I welcome a committee. I welcome a welcoming committee. I welcome change for the better for all of us. Most of all, I welcome discussion backed by action. None of us wants to be disgruntled or frustrated.
I do not have a CoSIDA manual for parliamentary procedures, so what is the process? Do we petition the Committee on Committes to add a Committee on Labor Standards and Practices?
While catching up on the 30+ comments posted since I last checked in, I missed the answer to my final question:
I'd encourage any and all of the "posters" on this blog to contact a CD person on the board (Eric McDowell at Union, Tom DiCamillo at West Chester, Blake Timm at Pacific, Bill Wagner at Depauw, Chuck Sadowski at New Haven or April Emory at Elizabeth City State)
I hope everyone finds the time to hit their inboxes!

First, to the anonymous poster, if you are going to attack another SID one on one as you did at the last part of your post, at least have the decency to list your name so that they can respond.
It is one thing to generally complain, or even state your objections about CoSIDA anonymously, but when you attack another person you should be man (or woman) enough to identify yourself.
On your point for workshops...the next few are going to be in family friendly, vacation worthy places: Nashivlle, San Diego, Tampa, San Antonio and San Francisco. As one with a young family, I am really looking forward to those as Workshops as chance to not only learn, but to enjoy some extended family time before and after.
(By the way, my wife and I spent a week camping in Banff before Calgary...you can't tell me its a bad vacation spot).
A big part of hosting a workshop and determining location is having a local organizing group ready and willing to help put things together. With Calgary and Rochester, those were in place and they did a great job in my estimation.
Locustgrove SID also brings up a good point...we are there for a Workshop, learning and networking. That should be the first purpose.
To anonymous:
Interesting post.
CoSIDA is an organization of over 2,000 members -- more this year than every before. It is as strong/weak, productive/unproductive as its members make it. It's certainly not perfect by any means but it exists and a lot of people put in the effort to try and make it better.
There is annual discussion about CoSIDA Site Selection. We've conducted a number of surveys over the years and there is no clear-cut consensus on where the workshop should be held. So,a lot of different places have been tried. Calgary, Rochester and Spokane might not be hotspots but they were three of the workshops that got among the highest ratings from those who attended. Is the convention supposed to be at a hotspot or is it supposed to provide a great program?
What makes a good workshop? The one that has the most people register or the one that has the most people attend?
Is the convention supposed to be a family vacation spot or a workshop for SIDs?
There is not general agreement on any of these questions.
Recently, the Site Selection Committee has decided to designate major cities in each corridor (East, Central, West) to use as a starting point. The Committee has also decided to give preference to cities that offer a single hotel property (rather than split the convention into more than one hotel). I am Site Selection Committee Chair this year and we are charged with selecting a site in the East Corridor -- we're starting with Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Orlando and Tampa.
I'm not sure who you are referring to as "some 35-year SID in the area" but you should ask the SIDs who volunteer to serve on the local organizing committee and ask them if they volunteered so they could be happy. I'd be surprised if any said that was their motivation.
If you are sold on a best labor practices committee, why not put one together? What would this committee do? What would its goals be? What evidence is there that it could be successful? I'm anxious to hear more detail on this idea from you. I'm not aware of any group in the realm of intercollegiate athletics that has been able to have an impact on the salaries, hiring/firing practices or other labor-related issues of coaches and administrators. Is there one out their that you are aware of that could be a model?
Finally, I'd ask what the purpose is of taking shots at people in this blog. Does that improve any situation?
Freedom of speech is a great thing. My motivation for posting on this forum was only to try and help folks, encourage them and to have the exchange of dialogue about our profession.
to sidude:
You have to build a network of backers. You have to develop a group of people who will serve as references. The more the better. The field is so crowded that oftentimes the resume isn't enough to get your name out there. It's the people who can call and write on your behalf.
Attend and participate in the conventions is another suggestion. You can get great visability by being on a panel at a workshop.
If you are able to attend a convention, do your best to meet new people. When I was relatively new to the business, I approached a couple of veterans to get their advice on things. I never had one tell me that they didn't have time to help.
I understand you don't like the word "volunteer" and I'm not familiar with every volunteer situation but I know when Sue Edson has put together a media relations team for the times Syracuse has hosted the NCAA Regionals, there's been a number of perks -- access to the media meals served during the day and in some cases lodging. The times I worked the regionals at Syracuse, before I was hired at Syracuse were great opportunities to meet national media and work with Division I SIDs.
I hope at least one of these suggestions was helpful.
Whomever anonymous 10:44 Feb. 14 is, I agree with other commenters who have called you out. I don't think there's any justification for calling out another D-III SID -- essentially by name -- like that.
Anonymous - I am glad you have my back, but I have to go w/ Pat Coleman and the others, we have a dialogue going, and I don't want to squander it by getting personal. I used that line about it not being personal in my lengthy comment for just that reason. There is a larger axe to grind here.
What would this committee do?
1. Establish ideal (and reasonable) guidelines for a SID to sport ratio. Obviously no two schools are the same, but a baseline of some sort needs to be drawn up. A department with 16, 18, 20, 22, 24... sports should not be a solo shop.
2. Once these baselines are established, combine them with the results of the survey in some sort of educational brochure specifically for ADs, and HR personnel. Call it, you are killing some of your best people. Call it diminishing returns.
3. Recognize and strive to be sure that being a SID and doing your job effectively at any institution shouldn't diminish the quality of one's life.
3A. Wear a black cape and mask and drop off paid fulltime interns at understaffed schools and smack around ADs and HRD's who don't recognize.
What would its goals be?
To work endlessly towards drawing a line that will allow and SID to have a life and a job. To end our dependence on caffine. To make sure we can at least get a freaking day off a month every month. To really educate our superiors about what we do and the skills we are required to have and how valuable we are.
What evidence is there that it could be successful? Is there one out their that you are aware of that could be a model?
Maybe the closest thing would be NATA. We can't argue health and safety, other than for our own.
Prior to man walking on the moon and returning to Earth, what evidence was their that man could walk on the moon and return to Earth? Just because it hasn't been done before doesn't mean it isn't worth trying. Are we afraid to be trailblazers? I certainly am not, and I am willing to stand up and fight for what I believe in. Clearly there are others who feel the same. So I say, let's rattle some cages.
I agree with everyone involved, calling someone out is despicable.
As a former SID, but still in higher education, I can provide some insight into how people in the profession are viewed by other professionals on campus...
Simply...No one knows you!!! Or what your do!!! Or that there is even a job like that on campus!!!
All SIDS MUST become active members of the campus community. Some already are, but if you're not, start getting some face time today.
Educate people about your job...The good parts only, don't complain about being busy, everyone is busy.
Show people how important your job is...Show people how complicated running a football game could be (with a home volleyball tournament, home field hockey game, and two soccers on the road).
Sports Information professionals will never get the respect that they deserve nationally until they earn respect on their own campuses from peers.
Sports Information professionals collectively lock themselves in closets. Be proud of what you do, show that you deserve an assistant, or more money, show that you’re an asset to the institution. Not just someone that tracks stats.
locustgrovesid:
As an SID who has been a part of the Workshop Program Committee since 1991 - and its vice-chair since 1998 - I am offended by your comment that "the local organizers for the Rochesters and Calgarys knew they were up against a challenge so they worked harder".
In Rochester, I served as co-chair of the Local Organizing Committee as well as Vice-Chair of Programming. Why wouldn't I put in effort when I'm hosting? Don't you do it when you have a regular game or a special event like an NCAA game? You should always feel you can do the best job in your own house.
That 'worked harder' comment should also be considered offensive by any other SID or group of SIDs who hosted a Workshop - Orlando, San Diego, St. Louis, Cleveland, Philly. I can go on with workshop sites, but I won't.
The success of a Workshop is defined by how much the host committee, the operable CoSIDA committees (Program, Social, Exhibits), and the SIDs who attend put into it. I will gladly share any of the Program Comment sheets for past years with you. It's the same thing every workshop. One comment says "The media panel was a waste." Three lines further down, "the media panel was outstanding!"
One evaluation form - from the St. Louis Workshop - had the comment that "you guys have to do something (for the San Diego workshop). The programming was all for the University Division!" And, again, four or five lines down, "I didn't attend much stuff. It was all for the College Division."
I don't expect to attend the Workshop and learn 15 or 20 new things to take back to my office. My first year in the business, yes. Not now. And I, too, am tired of a media person saying for the College Division to get ink, "It has to be a really good feature story." Gee, guy, I thought I could convince you to write 600 words on the fact that our senior forward just hit double figures (along with six others in the same game). We're smarter than that. At least I think so.
We also can't answer every need at CoSIDA. To give everybody what they, personally want, the Workshop would have to run for more than two weeks.
If you or any of the other posters want to see what it takes to put on a Workshop, join either the Program or Social Committees. The invitation goes out every year from Committee on Committees.
And if any of you want to respond privately to me, you can do it through my office email: dennis.odonnell@rochester.edu
What do you call an unidentified blog?
We call it Disgruntled SID. Welcome Tom. I need and could not explain the anonymous nature any better than locustgrove already has. I will add that there is precedent for this type of thing in the world though.
According to the Oklahoma Univeristy Law School web site: The entire purpose of The Federalist Papers was to gain popular support for the then-proposed Constitution. Some would call it the most significant public-relations campaign in history; it is, in fact, studied in many public relations classes as a prime example of how to conduct a successful campaign.
As a PR professional, what better model to follow to arouse change? Maybe we should change the name of the site to SID Publius.
If you have a complaint about CoSIDA, about the profession, then get involved and try to make a change.
I think that we have begun a healthy dialogue without too much in the way of name calling, other than the occasional coward tossed about. Kept alive in a constructive manner, posts penned by those named or unnamed, could serve as effective feedback for someone who represents the CD.
Perhaps if you would have read the comments prior to taking your defensive posture, you would have recognized that there is a concentration of actual ideas here. Many of them are geared towards making a change for the better for all of us.
Or, go find another profession.
In five years I have seen too many good people leave this profession becuase they were overworked. I don't recall much griping about the money, or any of them leaving without reservation. But they left, and that ain't good. It is what I am most concerned about.
I like my job, and as I have stated before, having this job and a life shouldn't be mutually exclusive concepts, but it is feeling more and more like one excludes the other no matter how much I try to walk away from it. Editors and collegaues still have my home and cell numbers. Teams still play on Sundays and holidays, and it seems they are doing it more and more often.
At any rate, I have suggested for you CoSIDA rep types a committee I would gladly join that could have a real impact on our own lives and profession by allowing us to work less, and more productively when we do.
Tom, as my esteemed CD rep, you can choose to sanctimonioulsy ignore my grievances as well as those of my fellow posters and the passers by who have left their mark, or you can drop in here from time to time and see which way the wind is blowing. That's up to you. We'll still be here, one way or the other. Ask yourself, which is more effective representation?
Wow this is the healthiest debate about the profession I have ever seen!
This is like SID therapy!!!!!
Instead of people ripping on what other people do, why don't you all get up off your ass and join a committee and make a contribution. That's what I did when I first joined CoSida and now I am one of the most involved people in the orginization. Thanks to people like Tom, Dennis and Pete, I have learned to love my job.
Its sounds like most of you people have no ambition. I have gone from a Division II program with no resources to a Mid-Major Division I with one of the best players in the country. I went out and found jobs I liked.
You get out of CoSida what you put in to it. If you go and drink for four fucking days, you are not going to get anything out of it. It's not a vacation, it work.
Also, you should all be thankful that you get to go to a job everyday and watch games. We are not brain surgeons, our job is fun, and if you don't think its fun then GET OUT OF THE PROFESSION and go work a 9 to 5 job.
Try having to clock in and out everyday and stay in an office with four walls. We get to hang in arenas, gyms and on fields.
As far as I am concerned we have one of the greatest jobs in the world. And don't tell me my job is more fun because its Divison I. Its fun because I make it fun.
STOP FUCKING COMPLAINING AND ENJOY YOUR JOB.

SID Who:
The Town Hall meeting would be an excellent place to start. The big problem that I see is what do you start with? Yeah, the hours are long, the demands are high, etc., etc. Why preach to the choir? (meaning me telling you something you already know).
It might be good for an open discussion (which the ECAC TM always is) with people throwing ideas back about how they solved their problem.
I had a conversation today with another SID (via email) about certification. The trainers have to be certified to get hired. This is a subject that reared its head at CoSIDA more than 10 years ago. What do you use to determine whether an SID is qualified to do their job? On the major college level, you may have people who are strictly publication folks and wouldn't have the faintest idea how to translate this: "J15 X, RD21, T21, S12, D05 Z, A12".
Same thing, there may be people who are only web folk. They can't do StatCrew, they can't use InDesign or Quark, but their web design skills are among the best you'll ever see. And there's the question of a degree. If you make a Masters mandatory, are you willing to grandfather in the greybeards who may only have a bachelor's?
This board has talked about some sort of Labor Relations or Labor Practices Committee for CoSIDA. You would have to formulate what you feel the committee can achieve and how it can best serve the membership. Your first step might be to contact Wayne Block at Christopher Newport. He's chair of CoSIDA's Committee on Committees. I think his email is wblock@cnu.edu but I'm not 100 percent sure.
Lines of communication have to be opened between the SIDs and the governing bodies of our administrators (NACDA for the ADs, CASE perhaps for the PR folk - correct me if I'm wrong). Maybe CoSIDA is the path there. It is the national organization. ECAC SIDA works hard and accomplishes a lot but you wouldn't have clout telling the AD at Blake Timm's school that he is overworking Blake because the school (Pacific) is in Oregon and ECAC SIDA is organized in the Northeast.
I'd like to see CoSIDA sponsor a media panel at the NCAA Convention. Let the Fourth Estate tell the ADs what we accomplish for them and for their schools. Tell a couple of horror stories, but also point out when we get it right (which is most of the time). Put a mixture of print and broadcast folk up there, and for cripe's sake, make sure you have someone who has actively covered the College Division.
Yes, by all means, make it a topic for discussion at the Town Meeting. We are still working on finding two moderators for that session. I'm going to contact a couple of possible candidates this week.
There is even a chance that we will hold a Town Meeting at CoSIDA. Stay with this board because if it happens, I will post something. We have a program committee conference call Wednesday to iron out a couple of things.
Kudos to Dennis.
Lots of good comments and ideas. I woud add that you might want to attend the ADs' national meeting. Good luck, and keep up the effort.
A couple of writers remarked, that if you do not like the profession, then leave. One of the best days of my life was when my last school fired me. Without that push out the door, I would probably would not have returned to get my Ph.D. in marketing.
I work a lot less hours, I love reading the literature, doing research, and teaching. And, oh yeah, see my family every day. My busiest day as a doctoral student does not even compare to my easist day as an SID.
Tommy Boy,
I am sure that you are disappointed to see that two DI SID's took the two open spots on the CoSIDA Board. I can say with confidence, however, that those two people (Nick Joos and Justin Doherty) are the right people to be in the rotation right now. They are going to help hasten some great change in the organization that will benefit all of us.
Does that mean you shouldn't be disappointed about no College Division rep in the rotation? No. Are you willing to be the one to accept the role?
Being in the officer's rotation for CoSIDA is a very time consuming proposition at this stage. If you want a good barometer of the time committment, talk to current president Doug Dull. Before 2000, Doug was a DII guy (at UC Davis before going on to the DI level) and has, I believe, some excellent insight on the time involved.
My personal opinion is that if either of the proposed changes in CoSIDA go through, whether it be joining NACDA or hiring an executive director, will open the door wide open for a College Division member to realistically take a spot in the rotation and not risked getting snowed under.
As for which route is best for the organization, NACDA or an executive director, that is a discussion for another thread...and one that should be discussed before January.

LocustGroveSID,
I will share as well as I can explain it.
For those not in the know, NACDA is the National Association of College Directors of Athletics. They are an organization that "runs" a number of other college athletic professional organizations, including the marketing directors, the athletic business managers, etc.
The board met with two of the directors of NACDA for a hour during our Saturday business meetings, and the board discussed their proposal at length the rest of the afternoon.
If CoSIDA were to join NACDA, the following would happen...
1. NACDA would take care of many of the nuts and bolts details of the workshop, such as site selection, hotel logistics, rooms, technology, etc.
2. CoSIDA would meet as part of the NACDA Convention, which is usually two weeks earlier than the CoSIDA Workshop is now.
While the two would meet concurrently, CoSIDA would still runs its own sessions for professional development. The advantage would be that CoSIDA members could attend panels from the other NACDA organizations and vise versa.
3. NACDA would take over a number of the administrative functions that are currently handled by board members. This could include financial operations, day-to-day business operations and office duties, Web site maintenance, etc.
In summary, while CoSIDA would still be a separate organization, CoSIDA would be a "part" of NACDA.
The biggest negative, in terms of the workshop, would be in cost. The cost of attending the CoSIDA/NACDA convention would be much more and, in addition, members of CoSIDA would have to join NACDA as well.
For those who did not attend Nashville, the board has formed a subcommittee that is looking at the pros and cons (there are many both ways) of joining NACDA. The same group is also evaluating the concept of an executive director...and more seriously than ever before. The subcommittee is charged with coming up with a reccomendation by January 2007.
Personally, I am not sold on the NACDA idea, but I am willing to keep an open mind in terms of what the subcommittee recommends.
However, I think that hiring an executive director is a concept whose time is overdue for a number of reasons. Most importantly, I think an executive director would truly open the door for a College Division member to enter the officer's rotation and have a chance of not getting buried.
In terms of an executive director, it would cost some money to being someone on whose only job is to advocate for us. Be prepared to ask yourself this question:
Right now, $50 for CoSIDA dues is a steal (for any professional organization). We could theoretically raise the annual money needed to hire an executive director, including salary, benefits, administrative assistance, etc., simply by doubling dues to $100. Would you be willing to see you dues double in order to have someone in place who will advocate on our behalf full-time and help do a lot of the organization's legwork?
The above question, when asked at the Division III meeting, was almost unanimous in favor.
Anyone who has any questions or comments about the NACDA or the executive director, contact any board member. We want to hear from you (and some have spoken already...thank you).
Blake Timm

It should be stated:
Doug Dull from then college division UC Davis as on the board. Yet UC Davis was about as far away from CD--resources and such--as possible. (Note they have moved to DI and beat Stanford in football.) This point should take nothing away from Doug—a good guy and doing good things.
Pete was in the rotation, but then went to SU.
BTW, Not sure most of us could handle it with our heavy work loads.
$100?
I have no beef with $100 a year if it has the potential to yield just an additional 10 waking hours at home.
Make it a hundo fifty and we can hire some muscle to deal w/ AD's who stand in the way of conventions due to cost:)

Everything about horse betting
We came across an article on ESPN.com written by Bill Finley entitled "2005 was a lousy year for horse racing." In his article Mr. Finley cites 9 reasons why 2005 was such a bad year for horse racing in America. Although we agree with several of his observations, number 8 on his list, "U.S. Pari-Mutuel Handle Falls", should have been dealt with more objectively.
horse racing strategy
There are two main forms of horse racing. There is harness racing and thoroughbred horse racing. The form of horse racing, which is popular in most parts of the world, is thoroughbred racing. On the other hand, harness racing is popular in countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, France, and Italy. Another form of racing popular in US is the quarter horse racing.
The Triple Crown stands as the ultimate test of greatness, and that's why on the first Saturday in May each year, America's thoughts turn to horse racing and the hope of just one more Triple Crown winner. Because we do, after all, need another hero.

ShoppingBlogging.com - Online Shopping for Christmas
It appears every single calendar year persons begin searching previously and before for Christmas. Final 12 many weeks I started out on the starting of October and had all of the provides wrapped through the end from the month. This calendar year I started out even sooner to carry benefit of the couple of outlets providing mid 12 several weeks revenue.
Visit Now : Shopping Online
Why Store Previously
Browsing previously has two primary benefits - acquiring more desirable offers and avoiding the vacation rush. However it has its drawbacks as well. Loads of toy and game producers specifically, only launch their newest merchandise pretty near towards the holidays. This usually means that if you're planning to store within the center in the yr, you won't have the ability to obtain the most up-to-date objects over the marketplace. One way to obtain approximately this would be to pre-order. Actually pre-ordering merchandise may well even fetch you special discounts and free of charge presents.
Christmas Shopping
But in particularly a handful of instances, when you maintain your eyes open, you'll be able to get more effective offers throughout the slow or off season, retail sensible. A lot of mobile phone producers launch their newest versions through the center with the yr. This suggests that previous types is going to be likely at rock bottom costs about two many weeks prior to the launch belonging to the replacement.
Some individuals carry looking before for the severe but buying correct right after the holidays of the subsequent holidays. Post vacation revenue are occasionally even greater than pre-holiday product sales as departmental retailers make an effort to obvious excess stock by providing ridiculous discount rates.
Needful Adjustments
Moving up Christmas purchasing a number of several weeks will take to some degree adjustment, spending budget sensible, specially all through the 1st yr for this timetable alter. However it doesn't carry a lot of to acquire used to it. Its just a matter of preserving to some set routine of placing just just somewhat money apart for shows.
The Gift Conundrum
Apart from producing purchases for the duration of revenue, obtaining in bulk can conserve you quite a lot of money. Its usually very good to break recipients into a handful of groups 1st - near household, loved ones, near close friends, buddies, colleagues - you receive the thought. Performing so enables you to organize your obtaining greater. That stated I only have two recipient groups - instant loved ones and other people.
Obviously you'd probably need to purchase a whole lot more private and thoughtful presents for that citizens closer for you. But for much more generic presents, I recommend pack hunting, that is just like pack hunting, only nicer.
Pack browsing right here usually means gathering a few of associates with comparable looking lists after which acquiring in bulk to carry benefit of economies of scale. I usually pack store with two other most people in relation to generic presents. You can discover that you’re able to get extremely great presents like wine glasses at actually amazing costs whenever you pack store.

The majority of people do not have any idea about what is possible with Thoi trang nam, and we really are talking about the range of effects. Like so many other things, you have to analyze what you are dealing with and weigh them against each other. It is not hard to find out more about this, and you can potentially save yourself some hassles by doing so. If you want to maximize your ROI, so to speak, then you need to seek out what kind of choices you have. What follows next are a few concerns about this topic that you will want to know so you can pick the best options.
The general complexities of men's and women's style
Both men and women could feel the demands of keeping their clothing up-to-date and in time, yet men's style often seems a lot less complicated. Of course, for both sexes, clothes and style choices may be equally as delicate, and there are many'fashionable'items which could easily become fashion faux pas - who are able to say they often see people walking around in 70s flares? On the other hand, men's fashion includes a few choice things that can exist forever - which man is going to keep an eye out of position with a good-quality, tailored suit, for example? Select classic pieces, colours and fabrics and you'll never seem out-of-place.
Why traditional men's fashion is timeless
The basic man's suit has hardly changed for over a hundred years. True, there are several kinds for various functions, however they are all common in their pursuit of a smart, sharp search for the individual. The good thing about basic style for men is that it's efficiently elegant efficiently cool. A well-groomed man can more often than not look his sharpest in a well-tailored suit, and this can be a testament to the style of such apparel. A suit will be utilized to work in many occupations due to the professional search it affords to the wearer, instilling a feeling of respect and confidence. Equally a match will undoubtedly be used to several social functions, like a tuxedo to a black-tie affair. This amazing versatility that enables suits to be utilized in virtually all functions is what gives it its timeless edge and a lasting devote men's fashion.
Contemporary movements in classic men's fashion
Though common men's designs can never be replaced, it is interesting to observe that changes in men's fashion trends have produced certain traditional clothes back in fashion. The recognition of vintage clothing, particularly, has taken back a wide-variety of basic styles into men's closets, such as that of the dandy gentleman. 'Dandy'is a term used to make reference to men who clothe themselves in a classic yet extravagant way, working in a sophisticated approach and placing value on appearance. This development for nearly'over-the-top'common style for men is evident from events like the'Tweed Run', wherever men and girls of all ages dress yourself in obviously Victorian-style clothing and decide to try the streets on vintage cycles - with many of the men sporting flawless mustaches! That is just one single of many examples of evidence presenting the resurrection of such types. Additionally, there are numerous blogs on line which focus on gentlemanly type - such as'The Dandy Project'and'Dandyism'- as well as entire internet sites such as'The Art of Manliness'dedicated to providing articles on traditional men's fashion and grooming.
In conclusion, though specific facets of common men's fashion can be brought back as new styles, the fundamental garments that they are based on will never slip out of fashion.
"All it takes really are a few basic costumes. And there's one key - the easier the better." - Cary Grant

The organization provides 1 mua hang gia re for each and every working day in each and each of the marketplaces it serves. The Groupon functions as an assurance contract utilizing ThePoint's platform: if a certain amount of gentlemen and females sign up for the supply, then the supply gets supplied to all if the predetermined minimum is not satisfied, no one particular will get the offer that working day. This decreases danger for suppliers, who can deal with the price reduction codes as quantity low cost prices as properly as revenue advertising devices. Groupon can make cash by sustaining all around half the revenue the buyer pays for the coupon.
For instance, an $eighty therapeutic massage could be obtained by the consumer for $40 by signifies of Groupon, and then Groupon and the retailer would break up the $forty. That is, the retailer gives a therapeutic massage valued at $eighty and gets around $twenty from Groupon for it (underneath a 50%/50% break up). The buyer receives the massage, or the property portray assist, in these illustrations, from the retailer for which they at initial paid out $forty (or $50) to Groupon. There are distinct companies to which Groupon to commence with did not offer you you its companies, which contains taking pictures ranges and strip golfing tools nevertheless, capturing ranges have been showcased on Groupon.
As opposed to classified advertising, the provider service provider does not pay any upfront expense to participate: Groupon collects individual information from well prepared customers and then contacts only individuals shoppers, primarily by every working day electronic mail, who may possibly potentially be fascinated in a distinctive items or services.
Groupon employs a substantial quantity of copywriters who draft descriptions for the offers highlighted by e mail and on the internet site. Groupon's advertising text for the 'deals' has been witnessed as a contributing factor to the recognition of the internet website, showcasing a distinctive mix of total fact-examining and witty humor.
Owing to Groupon's market place place turning into primarily composed of feminine customers, the discount rates are generally focused on the wellness, wellness and health and attractiveness marketplaces.
There are future problems with the organization solution. For instance, a productive offer could briefly swamp a very small business with also several shoppers, jeopardizing a possibility that purchasers will be dissatisfied, or that there will not be enough resolution to satisfy the require. Gap, a big clothes retailer, was all set to handle 445,000 coupon codes in a countrywide supply (in spite of the reality that it well-informed server issues at 1 stage), but a much more compact organization could turn out to be suddenly flooded with buyers. A one coffee store in Portland, Oregon struggled with an enhance in buyers for 3 months, when it provided around to 1,000 Groupons on the 1 day it was supplied, in accordance to 1 report. In reaction to relevant difficulties, Groupon officers state that 'deal' subscriptions need to be capped in progress to a cost-effective sum.
