The SID Board did not deliver a death-blow to Disgruntled. It sure did smack it down onto life support though.
I am a big fan of the board and have found it quite useful for things within the profession, but alas, I have found it detrimental to the agenda put forth by we folks here ay disgruntled. While a thread on Statcrew improvements has its value in my life, the only pressing issue that matters to me is left generally undiscussed elsewhere.
Today is January 12. The most recent post on the Work/Life Balance forum was November 21. So while the SID board serves a genuinely good purpose, it seems that it will serve to maintain an untenable status quo. November 21 is proof that Disgruntled is not dead, and it shall remain a forum for the advancement of SIDs who want to see the inside of their homes longer than the time it takes to walk in the front door, up the steps and off to bed.
Staffing in our profession is yet to catch up with our technology. This spring, baseball, softball, lacrosse(s), and tennis will all need to be in Statcrew and to the conference by 11 am following the contest. Me, in a one-man shop, will get it done, and all of the other office business will be taken care of because I am conscientious enough to be sure the I’s are dotted and T’s crossed. Everyone else in my conference will achieve to the same end.
We are our own worst enemies.
We are victims of our own successes. As a group we have pulled resources and are generally helpful to one another, easing the strain a bit. We have always done what has been asked. Like sausage and laws, no one cares to see sports information made, provided the sausage tastes good, the law does not have a deleterious impact, and the assists agree with the parental assessments.
While we cling to the sides of the lifeboat, I wonder how many are going to fall off of the side at the end of this year. I see the fingers of four slipping. Four good ones at that. In the meantime, as we desperately clutch, another technological tidal wave is steaming towards this overburdened craft. It resembles a camera with an Internet cord and headset, all ready to drop as streaming technology is set to become another mainstay of small school sports.
And with our innate tech savvy, and the infamous “other / various duties as assigned by the A.D” conspiring to drop yet more responsibility on our laps, I can’t help but wonder how can we make this better for ourselves. I can’t help but wonder who I will be working alongside at my peer institutions next semester.
It is a point that has been beaten to death on this board: the crux of the issue is not money, it’s help. It’s alleviating the burdens of the one-man 18-30-sport shops. It’s having an intern who can cover a Sunday. It’s having a person who puts their meals on their table in this profession working alongside. It’s having the security to know you can attend a family wedding, funeral, or gathering in the school year without coming back to a mountain of work and in inbox filled with hate-mail because L’l Johnny’s (insert sport here) score wasn’t posted. It’s about having one day a week where the cell phone is off, the email is unchecked, and all of a SIDs thoughts are somewhere outside of the world of collegiate athletics.
And with that, I anonymously and seriously ask CoSIDA, what is being and what has been done in the almost year since the initial CoSIDA post hit this board? I ask my SID brothers and sisters to jump on board here, and let’s discuss the pros and cons of joining our bosses at NACDA, with or without the body of CoSIDA.

I was just having a related conversation about this issue with a fellow SID yesterday - why don't we see more SIDs move into different administrative roles?
His point was that we are always doing the work during games and not spending time with ADs/Presidents.
We miss valuable "face time" that way.
So, in a long way around to answer your question - we should DEFINITELY attempt to join our bosses at NACDA.
If we have the organizational skills to run an event, we have the skills to help run a department. We just need to do a better job of putting ourselves in front of the people who can put us in those positions.
Say what you will about CoSIDA, but it has a purpose if you want to just stay in sports info. If you are looking for something else (like a job with better hours, less work and better pay), NACDA is probably a better route to travel.

...This is just brillant
Wow. That was really well written and well put.. I only disagree with the part about not being about money. The profession has been underpaid for so long, it is way, way behind. Starting salaries for coaches at most schools are a often lot higher than that of an sid. Even if the sid has significantly more experience.
Salary will commensurate with experience? Ha, that's a joke. The more experience you have means the less chance you have of someone actually wanting to pay for that experience.
There are some shops out there with one or two assistants.. And those guys work the same amount as us one-man gigs. And you know, as soon as you have help, an exponentially additional amount of work will magically become your responsibility; totally defeating the purpose of getting help.
I'm pretty sure about 90% of the 20 or so surveys i've done in my career state the average work week is in excess of 60 hours. So we are all volunteering an additional half a week, per week, during the school year.. so take away your lazy summers and if you're lucky, some time during winter break.. but simply add the numbers you log during the year and see how much volunteering you have done after a few years of that..If you're like me, and many of you are, it will be measured in years. (not hours, days, or even weeks of overtime).. years of time spent working for free.
Say what you want, I love my job, I do. But just because you're fortunate enough to enjoy your job, and have a job your're good at, a job that apparently, and even more so lately; not very many people can do effectively, why should you have to do it for free.
Hey I'll put in some extra hours, that's fine. but when you're reaching years and years of overtime that you aren't being compensated for, that's just wrong.
You do the math, it doesn't take long to reach the point where you have simply, and essentially given tens of thousands of dollars of your services away for free. Just something to think about.
Glad to see you back. You raise some interesting points, particularly about professional development. At the same time, I think that as a field, we are guilty of bitching too much, and that many coaches and administrators frankly do not respect us because they have no clue as to what we do, and we make no effort to educate them. Keep in mind, education can take place, even to an unwilling student.
If you are looking for additional posters, I would be happy to contribute. I have dropped you a couple of emails, but they have been bounced back. Is there a functioning address we can contact you at? Or are you not taking new contributors?
buddhit -
We'll gladly add you to the rotation. In order to protect your identity, set up a hotmail or yahoo account and post it. Do not include any of your personal info on the acct. Disgruntled will email you.
It sounds like you think NACDA may be a good forum for some of that educating, no?
AD Material...
Can I be the only one out there who is fed up with the disrespect our brethren keep getting in regards to promotions to upper level positions within our departments?
Why is it that someone who "sells" a discounted arena sign to Taco Bell is deemed to be Assistant/Associate Athletic Director/or even AD material, while those of us who put in more hours in three months than most marketing people do in an entire year, and have more institutional knowledge about how our athletic departments function, are considered second class citizens when it comes to advancement?
Doesn't it bother any of you that these "marketing types" are more and more being put in charge of Media Relations, when they have absolutely no idea what they are doing?
I would love for this subject to be a major topic at the next CoSIDA Convention.
Once again, am I the only one out there who is bothered by this, or should I just enjoy working 80 hour weeks with no hope of advancement?
Come on folks, if we don't stand up for ourselves...who will???
Is there any way we can get the spamming to stop? It's bad enough I get it in my email, now I've got to come here and read it?
the spams gone? YEAH!!
God damn it the spam is back!
so it's a darned if you do, darned if you don't situation, eh?
saltysid - to answer question as to why marketing folks are deemed more qualified/appropriate/whatever for an AD or an Asst. AD position than folks like us who carry such a load and know the ins and outs better than most is simple. While we're buried in our work, they're out smoozing, brown-nosing, whatever you'd like to call. Also, since they can bring in $$$ that the higher-ups can more readily see, that's another check mark in their column. I firmly believe that SIDs help bring in $$$ for the school/athletic dept., but it's more indirectly brought in and nothing real tangible or seen by the naked eye.
It's actually not spam... What has happened is CoSIDA has figured out the work / life balance thing, and with all of the free time created, they are making an effort to improve its membership's sex lives. I maen, what else are you going to do in your hour away from the office each day, sleep?
sid vicious ... LOL ... too funny
