Cough… Cough… I Feel a Slight Touch of Blue Flu Coming On
Six years on the job, and not one sick day. I am yet to miss a game because of illness. That is not to say I haven’t been sick. I have input basketball games with sweat dripping from my feverish face, aches up and down my body, sinuses set to explode and the kind of sore throat about which they make commercials with really bad actors. And there I was, not caring about the outcome, so long as it was over and I could go to my warm bed, and hopefully get better in six hours of sleep before the 9:00 a.m. meeting.
If I had left at 6:00 p.m. on a day that most would have taken off, no one would have been available to cover the rebounds, assists and blocked shots of the post-finals week non-conference showdown entertaining the tens of ones of fans on hand. The box score wouldn’t have gone on the web, the visiting SID would have been left in an awkward position without a game file or box score, and the papers without a press release to copy and paste into their pages.
The email would have piled up complaining about the misery of an athletic department that can’t post a score the same night as the game in a world in which almost everyone it seems is providing stats live. A new flurry would follow when the stats were not to the liking of fans and coaches on hand who had a better view than me as I tried to pick rebounds and the like from a video in which I couldn’t read the numbers on about three-quarters of the involved jerseys.
Oh, and while I was watching the video the next day, still more emails questioning my competence, intelligence, dedication, would roll in. Yeah, the annoying and insulting repercussions of not being in attendance would have provided a bigger headache than the one afflicting me during the game.
It doesn’t make me a hero. No, it doesn’t even make me special. All of us within the ranks do it, have done it, and will likely continue to do it. If anything, it just makes me an asshole. It makes all of us assholes. If you can’t figure out why without my further elaboration, you are a dumb-ass asshole.
I n this life, I have friends away from sports. On rare occasions, I actually get to see them. I call that fleeting period of my life summer. One of those summer nights, I sat out on my deck with a beat cop and a beer. He, along with several other members of his district, and several more from other districts around this East Coast megalopolis city had all contracted the same illness. Its side effects include a day of golf, fishing, lawn work and time spent with the family. It is brought on by being overworked and underpaid in a thankless but necessary job.
It seems that their inboxes do not fill with complaints when they are stricken with the illness known as blue flu, but when it strikes in the summer, which is sort of “season crossover time” in the world of police, the complaints from the city’s denizens become numerous, overwhelming supervisors, and eroding public confidence in the po-po’s leadership. That heat rolls the shit back uphill, if only for a few days, and somehow parties representing either side meet and work out grievances. Sometimes the flu hits pilots of airlines, and even nurses have been known to contract a similar illness.
So I am left wondering, what would happen if I became violently ill one day, and the SID I had shaken hands with earlier in the week had contracted the illness from me, and he had shaken the hands of two other SIDs that week, who had shaken two or three more hands, and the symptoms all coincidentially manifested themselves on the same Saturday?
What would Sunday’s newspapers look like when there was a Saturday on which no one was healthy enough to send out scores? What would web sites look like if no one was healthy enough post scores? Would people notice the starting lineups not announced, the programs not set out, and the lack of live stats?
What would be the reaction of parents and athletes who were replied to with the simple truth that I and all of my colleagues mysteriously fell ill on the same day, and our supervisors never had the foresight to recognize they have no redundancy in place for a technocratic position? Would they email AD’s? Would they email presidents?
Several of my colleagues and I have had the discussion about the work that would pile up in between, but as a firm believer in postmodern theory, I say if we treat it like a non-day, that is precisely what it becomes. The scores never get posted. The stats never get factored in. The kids who we don’t want to see get screwed get screwed a bit, but once in awhile, when you are being regularly screwed without the decency of dinner first, you have to look out for number one. The truth is, while we don’t want to see them screwed, mommy and daddy, and mommy and daddy’s checkbooks want to see that far less than we do.
God knows they aren’t afraid to pick up a phone or click an email link to get what they want.

My school started football a couple of years ago and when we built the stadium, the physical plant director didn't think it was necessary to have a flag pole. Something about it wasn't a good use of funds for just five Saturday's a year.
What did I do?
The same thing every SID does - I solved the problem by having the cheerleaders march out with the flag on a pole.
Everybody loved it, except me.
It was a royal pain to coordinate this every week (the details are unimportant - just trust me with this...)
Anyway, one day I had enough and I "forgot" to get the flag and have the cheerleaders march out with it. All we had for that day was an electronic flag on our scoreboard.
What happened? I got my flagpole the next week.
I guess what I am saying is, if we all skipped a Saturday during hoops season, everybody would realize exactly what we do in the process and maybe we would get a little more respect.
I say we pick a day and don't report any results. That will wake some people up...
Once upon a time I was just like that. I had to go to work. Had to. Sick, well, didn't matter. Tired? Frustrated? Had to be there.
That was then. I figured it out.
It is just sports. That is all. It is not life and death. Teams win, teams lose, and still the next game gets played. There are more important things than sports. I know this a shock to the American system, but it is true. And so I have embraced that philosophy. I have taken a couple of days off during the week. And the world did not stop spinning. I have taken sick days, and life went on. I missed a basketball game for a family event, and I felt good about it.
Of course, if you are stuck with a type-A personality AD who believes in some farcical thing like "professional stamina" where you have to be there rain or shine, health or illness until the day you die, or if they take pride in never seeing their home in the daylight, then you are pretty much screwed. And then you have to answer the careful question: "Is the enjoyment of my job worth these headaches?" If the answer is no, then it is probably time to move on.
Not a single one of us is going to look back on our deathbeds and think "If only I had gotten that media guide done one day sooner!"
I myself am at a similar crossroads in my life. I am fortunate to have an assistant, a young man who I trust tremendously and whom I can count on to get things done. However, the progress that had been promised in the past has yet to occur, and frankly I am growing disillusioned by being the subject of know it all fans telling me how much I suck. I enjoy the sports, I enjoy working with the student-athletes, but I am beginning to seriously wonder if it is worth it.
So take a day off. You are legally entitled to do so. If you are sick, take the day off. You owe it to your fellow employees. Let the rest of the department see how valuable you are. Let them realize how much work you do. And when you come back, refreshed and ready to go, everybody will be a winner.
We do ourselves a grave disservice when we don't take some time off, particularly when we are ill.
Does it bother anyone else that the second-largest forum on the SIDBoard is "Statistical Software"? I don't know about you, but if any athletic director or president saw that, wouldn't it reinforce their belief that we are all just a bunch of stat geeks who have no clue about PR and own multiple pocket protectors?
I don't know about the rest of you, but Stat Crew currently does about 99.9% of what I need it to do, which is track the stats and print out a box score. Stats are a part of our job, but its not the only thing, and certainly not the most important. So what if I can't figure out my QB's passer rating over the last five minutes?? Nerd it down people. Personally, I get a bigger kick about getting a feature story on a student-athlete in an out-of-town paper than sitting at a game and doing stats. Am I the only one who feels like this?
In response to the above post...
Well said.
ouch. my sides. Siddude w/ the post of the day.
Our jobs are important, no question. And there are many administrators out there that don't get it. But us running around telling them we are important isn't going to get it done. That is why us sometimes *not* being there will better underscore our significance.
There will always be a fire during vacation time. It is usually due to bad planning or lack of foresight by those in a position of authority. And usually it is completely over-reacted to and in two weeks is mostly forgotten.
As far as the secret thing, save 4.95 and check out Wikipedia.

Well, it's nice to see the blog coming back to life a little... There have been some interesting responses..
I would love to think a strike day would be effective, however, someone was right when they said everyone wouldn't do it. There are people that are content in their situation, and see no need to risk that. It's a little different when you have a union, and more legal legs to stand on.. which leads to another point.. it's pretty irrelevant what the law says. We have no protection under any fair labor standards act. And all the research from that is just comparing us to each other.. so it looks like most of us are being taken care of within the market..
The problem is.. the market value of our jobs is nationally just too low.. I'm sorry to all of those of you who think we don't deserve more and should just deal. Look around, there aren't many if any arenas outside higher ed, that employees could be asked to commit the hours and efforts that we do. Most schools I'm sure grossly overpay a number faculty members for what they do, have done and bottom line, are worth. Why not "overpay" one more person who puts your name out there, probably more than any single person on any campus.
Ask a business owner who decides to now stay open on the weekends, but not pay his employees to work those hours.. come on, aren't you loyal, aren't you commited to success of the organization. see how well that would fly.
People blame cosida, saying they don't support our cause. They are responsible, in part, but also in some ways not. However, this is all we have as a collective of professionals. The NCAA is a governing body. It's really their responsibility. I know people don't think much of government these days. But the ncaa isn't a conference. It's a governing organization with responsiblilties to all its members (insitutions and employees). I mean if they want to prohibit me from playing fantasy football, then they can mandate to pay me a salary that fairly compensates my job, its duties and the hours required to do that job.
Sidebar: I'm fine with restricting student-athletes from certain activities, but leave me alone. fantasy sports are hobby and a second form of income for some of us. Seriously. I think they should say that no one in the athletic department can trade stocks or rent property to students then. I'd be willing to bet it has cost many a landlord a lot more gambling on student housing than I ever lost in fantasy sports. So, if its a gambling issue.. Read the definition of gamble (To take a risk for some advantage). If its just gambling on sports, then we aren't really solving the problem.
So, is there an answer? I hope there is. I was told a couple of times that it was my responsibility to work it out with my school and my boss. I've been proactive to try and facilitate change, not just for me but for the profession. My boss is as supportive as an AD can be. But he's not going to pay me out of his personal savings either. (ironically, I have paid people out of my pocket when I desperately needed help)
And to top it off. Regardless of everything I've done for the last 10 years. It came down to.. You need to stop complaining and just do your job or you won't have one.
So, that's it huh. I try and speak up for myself and my colleagues, just like cosida, my conference and the ncaa told me to, and my job becomes jeapardized. As it would in many places if people really pleaded their cases on their own.
And what's the alternative. Leave for the same plight at another school. Leave a profession you are good at and really do enjoy just because no one will pay you (not well, not great, but simply fairly for the services you provide.)
Speaking of Sick.. I'm a little sick and tired of receiving anonymous emails from people asking/telling why we don't do x and y like every other school in the conference.
I have received three of these in the past couple of months and it has really fried my potatoes. The reason is, in all three instances.. NO SCHOOL IN MY CONFERENCE does what they said. I did look into it, I did research it. I took time away from doing real work to go on a goose chase. I normally don't respond to anonymous emails either, but I had to on a couple of these.
I was so angry but had to be diplomatic. Not sure why, but I was. I was a little rude. But said I took the time to look into it, which they obviously didn't and just basically lied or made it up. I felt like saying I was glad they didn't sign it because I wouldn't want to tarnish my opinion of their child in regard to their blatent dishonesty.
It's not like all the sudden the other schools pulled everything off their sites.
I don't mind emails if they are justified. Or if I made a mistake. But come on. How can someone just flat out lie like that.. What do they think. I'm just going to take the word of someone who doesn't have the stones to even sign something like that, and do something that is not really a reasonable request for my school.
Sometimes I think the motto of cosida should be.. Whatever You Do, It's Never Enough..
Why do we even respond to anonymous emails? If someone can't be bothered to tell us who they are, why do we have to be diplomatic?
Please understand - I am including myself in this. More than once, I have swallowed my pride and responded kindly to a parent/girlfriend/boyfriend/resident freak who has some axe to grind.
This is totally related to our salaries and the hours we work. We continue to take the abuse and thank our bosses for it.
The trainers have done a great job of improving their situations. We should be able to do the same.
I get the feeling Buddhit is going to suggest we all take 4/20 off( if he isn't already)!!
The schools will never appreciate what we do unless we unionized. I left the business in May and have thought about getting back into it - but with the low pay, long hours and incompetence in most athletic departments, is it worth it? The parents are bad, but some of the coaches (and dare I say other SIDs) are nitwits that cause more harm than good.
LOL - Nah, not into the smoke.
Unionizing wouldn't work. There are too many different schools with too many different staffing variables. And too many young, gung-ho kids who would be more than willing to do our jobs for a fraction of the cost.
CoSIDA is sadly no help. No controversy may be addressed. Hell, we can't even discuss it on the other board. Dissent is bad.
I suppose I see what I want to see sometimes... a closer look says buddhist, not buddhit...
With a slightly red face and clearer eyes I offer:
Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.
And that is why this blog still has value. As you note, the issues raised here, which obviously appealed to a portion of CoSIDA's membership, need a forum for frank discussion, without the potential for retribution.
Clearly, the issues that have been raised in the past struck a nerve. If there were no truth in what was being said here, we would have drawn no ire. You say that CoSIDA is no help, and that unionizing won’t work. I agree on both points.
I ask you and others... Which path will?
Is the solution to stop paying dues, and create a new professional organization? How do we improve the working conditions of the profession on the whole?
Do we wait and just allow the school’s that don’t get it suffer without SIDs or inferior SIDs as good members walk away, leaving behind less than conscientious SIDs? Don't we all suffer that way?
In your opinion is there a proactive solution or is our best bet to rely on passivity and institutional reaction?
Is our best bet to be entirely self-reliant within our own institutions and not think of colleagues or the state of the profession? Does that type of approach serve a greater good?
I fear that perhaps we are the only ones who believe our positions are as truly valuable. I think that many AD's and administrators just see us as a necessary cog in a vast machine. What do we bring to the department? We "just" write press releases, keep scores.
First, we must come to a couple of conclusions that I think are pretty obvious.
1. Everybody wants more money.
2. Everybody perceives that they work longer than everybody else.
I have never met anyone in an athletics department who isn't "busy". Who doesn't work more than the average joe in the 9-5 world. So, for us to whine about how busy we are is going to often fall on the deaf ears of a coach who just finished watching 500 kids in a soccer scouting camp, or a development guy who has spent 20 hours trying to score a four or five figure donation.
Our problem is that so much of what we do goes on behind the scenes, after everybody goes home, or worse, when we are at home and updating a web site at 10 p.m. And there is no measuring stick for our success.
We aren't coaches, with wins and losses and trophies to rate our progress.
We aren't like trainers, who keep players healthy and who administrators can watch doing rehab work or taping.
We aren't like marketing folks, whose progress and success can be viewed in attendance marks and ad sales.
It seems for many, the only time AD's really hear about us is when we goof, or are perceived to have goofed by an overzealous parent or fan.
Here is the controversial part. Maybe the AD's aren't wholly wrong.
Ask yourself honestly: How significant are you in your department? What have you done to make yourself important? Why do you deserve more money? Everybody thinks they deserve more, from a CEO down to a McDonalds fry cook. But why do they really deserve more money.
We haven't done enough to market ourselves as a profession. We aren't perceived as valuable. We are very replaceable. The mentality, especially at smaller schools, is that any 22 year old can run the scoring software, and if they miss an assist or a sacrifice bunt over the course of a season, is that really so bad?
Press releases are a little more difficult, but anybody with a journalism background can write one, right?
You ask what we can do? Here is one option. We can leave. We can go get a regular 9-5 job. Be it in University PR, or the private sector. Or we can go somewhere else. Professional sports, another school. Of course, there is no promise that the grass is any greener there.
Or we can stay where we are comfortable, despite our problems and headaches, and make ourselves heard. Have weekly meetings with our bosses. We can get involved in the campus community, such as working on employee committees or groups. If unionizing is your thing, you can even look into joining your local university employee union, if there is one.
Want to join a professional organization that matters? Try PRSA (http://www.prsa.org/). It is expensive to join, but it is a very active organization and a means to improve your career. (Full disclosure, I have not joined it myself, but likely will if I am still in the business in the next few months.)
As for CoSIDA? One option is to forget them. If you don't like what they are doing as an organization, then don't support them. If you are fortunate enough to have more than one person in your shop, then you only need one person to be a member of the organization so that you can nominate for Academic All-American. (As an aside, I have a good friend at a DI mid major who refuses to join CoSIDA because he disagrees with their bylaws and refuses to abide by them. So he has an assistant who is a member).
Or, we can do something that is potentially more valuable and organize ourselves here and act for change. If you are a dues-paying member of CoSIDA, then it is your organization, and you have the right to try to change things. The DSID site is a great forum for the grass roots beginnings of change, but we need to have serious discussions of what we would like to see the organization do, rather than just bitch about it.
But most SID's don't want to rock the boat. The newbies don't haven't burnt out yet, the vets have found their comfort zone and don't want to screw up their pension. That is going to make change even more difficult.
So, let's start a new discussion. If you ran CoSIDA, what changes, rules, etc would you like to see them support? Remember that these have to work across the board, from D-1 to DIII, from 10-person shops to the half-coach, half-SID shop.
I echo your fears and agree with you on many points. Before I take the bait at the bottom of your post, I do want to reiterate, from a personal standpoint, this is not about money, it’s about time. Some of my fellow “registered posters” may disagree, but I feel my annual compensation is fair, even if my hourly is not. The hourly would move more into accord if I were sharing the workload of 28 sports with anyone.
For me, it is solely about having a day off a week. Just one day, once every six days without any thoughts of the office or job, and getting home a few nights a week while my wife is still awake. My wife chose to work this weekend, knowing full well that Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were total washouts in my life. My first post this morning killed time in a quiet, empty house, waiting for the day’s first results before heading off to a basketball game. This one comes from my living room, which I am just getting to plop down in now, my wife is, and judging by the drool on the pillow, has been, asleep for quite some time now. I obviously missed The Simpsons. Thank God for TiVo.
Two other thoughts before I bite… At a small school, we bring plenty to the table beyond stats and press releases. Many of us work closely with our Alumni and Development Offices, and on or with our Communications staffs. We are called on regularly to perform tasks outside of the scope of our job descriptions. We are -- right or wrong -- the de facto IT professionals in our department. We are the publication and web specialists. We are the photographers and/or photography coordinators. We are the general-purpose cement in a tube, smeared across the cracks in the department.
I know I could leave and command good money doing prepress for a printing company. I turned down the better money and 40 hour, 9-5 week because I fear boredom more than exhaustion. Boredom is exhausting in its own way.
So, what would I do….
Well, I won’t pretend to have all of the answers, that’s why I put forth all of the questions - I am looking for answers, but here is a short list for the hypothetical dictatorship…
Start by educating the membership and new members in particular about CoSIDA. When I sent my first check to upstate New York, the only thing I feel I got in return was the right to nominate Academic All-America candidates. No handbook telling me what I was paying for besides that right. No manual outlining the organizational hierarchy or parliamentary procedures. No publication outlining what I could do to better the organization or what the organization could do to better me. No sense of efficacy whatsoever. I suppose that translates into establishing a welcome committee or a membership education and benefits committee.
In the spirit of creating committees, I would establish a committee committed to improving the lives of membership. A group that lobbied on behalf of we less fortunate members at any athletics convention an AD or President was sniffing around. A group concerned with labor and quality of life issues. A group working proactively on behalf of the membership that we might not have heart attacks in our offices.
I would issue a letter of apology to all members for letting Phil Ticknor build a web site (acting on his own initiative) that the organization should have had the foresight and follow through to build.
I would eliminate the ridiculous magazine with the pixilated pictures, dated news that can go to the web, and self-congratulatory lists of consecutive football games worked. It’s 2007 - save a tree and some money – post it on the site. You can put that money and paper to use on my first point. I’ll add CoSIDA news to my RSS.
That’s my list for now – the dog needs a walk, and I need about 80 winks. Good question. Can I turn the same back to you and open it to the floor?
I've been there in my D-III days. Believe me, things are not always better or different at the D-I level.
That said, however, why are you waiting for CoSIDA to educate your otherwise ignorant AD? It is easy for me to say this, as I don't have to do the hard work, but here is "what I would do."
I would schedule an appointment with my AD, a minimum of two hours, to discuss the media relations office. I would very early in the discussion define for him exactly what your day-to-day operations are. I would, in writing, detail what it means to work on 28 or so sports.
Then, I would come right out and tell him what you thought of his question about whether or not you were at the game, or how you feel when he suggests leaving early.
None of this should be done critically. It should be made clear that you just want to make sure he understands the nature of your job.
Realisitically, he has never touched a web site, never used Quark or InDesign, never run a StatCrew program. You have. You have done each and every one of these things. And while he doesn't need to know how to do these things, he does need to know that they do go on and have a rough idea of how long it takes.
Be proactive. Go talk to him. If he blows you off, then you know that it is time to move on.
Just my 2 cents.
My problem is with Cosida. I know of no one in my profession who can say "Gee CoSIDA is a great professional organization. They have done so much for me." It seems that the sole reason that many people even become members is to ensure that they can nominate academic all-americans.
Attempts to change are met with great resistance. Several years ago I spoke in front of the board at one of the meetings and asked them to consider being more proactive towards a slate of causes. More recently I had asked them to be supportive of a piece of NCAA legislation that was going though the voting process. In each case, I was told that my request for support was denied. In the first case, the board had not desire to change and thought my request was foolish. In the second case, the board said that the legislation was not something that applied to all levels of the organization, and therefore they couldn't support it.
So what does this mean? My first thought is that as it is COSIDA is too large and too diverse. The overwork issues that face a big time major like a UCLA or Duke is simply going to have no bearing on a small DII, DII or NAIA, or perhaps even a low DI mid major.
So, there would seem to be a place for a new organization that better represented the interests of its members, an organization that actually does something regarding the needs of its members. But what are those needs? That is the question I think we need to answer here. What would we like our organizing body to do?
Why can't there by a DII-SIDA or a DIII-SIDA? CoSIDA is too big and diverse for anything useful to come out of it. ECAC-SIDA and its leadership is useless since the convention is only drinking. Why can't the divisions split off and form their own groups that could do something useful for the membership?
In the NAIA, we have a NAIA-SIDA. It's not perfect, but it helps.
It might be worth having to use a word-verification system...
More on topic -- if my president complains one more time because the local paper didn't run a (baseball/softball/whatever) score...
Please can we get some verification to keep the spammers out? One of the few highlights in my miserable SID life is seeing new responses to threads, or, better yet, new blog posts on disgruntledsid. When I click them and get spam, I am immensely disappointed.
This is only somewhat sarcastic...
Is it a problem when I nearly fell asleep at my desk at 5:30 pm?
DI can also be involved in pools as long as there is no prizes (money or otherwise) associated with them. The note probably should have emphasized prizes rathter than entry fees.
I was disgusted by that email from our "president". I dislike the NCAA's rules as it is, particularly because it equates playing fantasy baseball or going into a sports book (both legal activities under federal law) with embracing organized crime, while it ignores other gambling issues.
But that aside... No, I don't think there will be clue from our governance board until there is enough demand and outrage from the membership.
We need to take a page from the athletic trainers. We need to market ourselves better. In fact, we should start with our name. "Sports Information Director" or SID is antiquated. It went out with button shoes. Alas, I have not come up with a better name to describe what we do. I call my office Athletics Media Relations, but it does nothing to really describe the day-to-day operations.
So what is a better name for us?
I have some other ideas, which I would like to share in the future.
buddhistSID,
I think the most appropriate name for our profession is Athletic Communications, however, Athletic Media Relations is more appropriate than SID/sports information director. To 99% of the public, the "sports information director" is the guy you call to get the pool hours for the next two weeks or you call to see if you can settle a bar bet with his buddy over who was the ACC free throw percentage leader in 1964. I think Communications is the most all-encompassing term, and I may go to my AD this summer to see if I can get a title change.
We changed to "Athletic Communications" a couple of years ago. It just makes more sense.
Do we have a sports department or an athletic department? Athletic.
Do we just provide information or do we communicate? Communicate.
Ergo - Athletic Communications. Now if I could just get my new AD to stop calling me an SID...
The only thing I would say to that is that if we start changing our titles than our profession needs to be renamed. We are in "sports information" ergo we are Sports Information Directors. Evidenced by the name of our professional organization (College and University Sports Information Directors Association).
I'm not sure I 100% agree that Athletic Communications is exactly the right title. We do more than just communications. Same with those who call themselves Athletic Media Relations - we do more than media relations. There needs to be an all-encompassing term even though that would be the world's longest job title.
I'm open to more thoughts, though.
NCAA Bylaw 10.3 Gambling Activities
Staff members of the athletics department of a member institution and student-athletes shall not knowingly:
a. Provide information to individuals involved in organized gambling activities concerning intercollegiate athletics competition;
b. Solicit a bet on any intercollegiate team;
c. Accept a bet on any team representing the institution;
d. Solicit or accept a bet on any intercollegiate competition for any item (e.g. cash, shirt, dinner) that has tangible value; or
e. Participate in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics, through a bookmaker, a parlay card, or any other method employed by organized gambling.
This was from Page 45 of your DIII manual, if you have ever read it, also, you might want to not take the glass is half empty approach that you and so many others take so often on this site and realize this was just a soft reminder from the CoSIDA president, for those who might not actually know that this isn't condoned nor allowed by the NCAA.
Do you take the same approach with wearing your seatbelt or speeding? It's a law, that many people abuse or neglect, but nonetheless, it's a law. The same goes for the NCAA Bylaw and that's what you must abide by if your school is affiliated with NCAA. If you don't like it, you have the freedom that our country is blessed with, to choose another workplace or lobby against the Bylaw you don't like.
However, I really don't see this happening because you are just like the people you perceive those on the CoSIDA board to be as you say afraid to make change or do anything to rock the boat because it will ruin their pension.
Remember that fact that you write without stating your names, YOU ARE NO BETTER!
ALSO, YOU ARE WRONG! These measures of change you want to see, take time to move forward.
The CoSIDA of today that I have seen at conventions of the past few years is one of a crossroads, where drastic changes are going to be made including last year's talks of establishing an Executive Director of CoSIDA.
I am sure you know that these people on the board do there jobs on a volunteer basis, while they are tending to their daily duties of Sports Information Professionals. Think if you devoted time to this position, how you would manage?
Have you asked any of the board members you know even at the smallest levels what they do and how they manage to put in time to their CoSIDA responsibilities?
Have you ever had a hand in being on a local organizing committee for a convention and see the amount of work, time and planning that goes into that aspect of the yearly duties and that's for SIDs that aren't on the board and in most cases many smaller school SIDS with 24 sports at the DIII level and no other help aside from students in the office.
You have a voice, but you choose to waste your time posting here instead of going to the source, the CoSIDA board. What are you so afraid of and why do you hide behind your veils here on this board?
If our ancestors who built this country what it is today said: "Well we talked to those people once to fight for our freedom and they didn't listen, screw it!" or if MLK Jr. said: "Well we tried one peaceful protest, I guess we are never going to have rights or be treated equally" the America of today would have been a much different place where you wouldn't even be worrying about the plight of the SID, we would be being told what to do, not telling people what we want out of life.
Obviously, the issues of CoSIDA are not as important to daily life as the atrocities of Freedom and Civil Rights were to our country, but let's try and try again to change what we can in CoSIDA. Just having this type of feedback, which I truly enjoy reading helps to spark ideas that I might have for our profession. I hope to bring your ideas with me if given the chance to speak in San Diego at the CoSIDA Town Hall Meeting or in speaking with a CoSIDA board representative in my area.
Bring your ideas and voice to the level where it matters, preaching to those who agree with you is liberating, stress relieving, validating, but it does nothing to help further your cause.
In my eyes, you are stating the obvious areas that SIDs want to have changed for years, but the CoSIDA board needs to hear this from real people, not the anonymous, the SID Vicious, the sid who, sidude and BuddhistSID's of the world.
Yes, it may rock the boat, but if it's done professionally and through the proper channels, your job will not be in jeopardy, you might actually be surprised it might land you on the board of the CoSIDA you have such strong views against.
Firstly, let me say, I only want the same things you do, but I am sick of talking anonymously doing it and not actually taking any real steps towards a solution.
Now let me first respond to your statement against my previous post.
Again, you are guilty of the same thing you say I am guilty off, don't attack the messenger CoSIDA's president of just bringing light to the situation that some SIDs might not be aware of entering a pool entry fee or not is not allowed.
The President's statement is correct, the only part you didn't see was the fact that he didn't put with a prize associated with it.
Yes, he did leave that fact out, but you and I both know there has never been an NCAA pool that didn't have some type of prize associated with it even if it was just a sub at our local sub shop who was an athletic sponsor. Plus, in compliance offices, they have always told me it's just better to stay away from a detrimental situation in any fashion to protect yourself.
"CoSIDA Members:
You've undoubtedly heard this from your on-campus compliance office this week, but this is a gentle reminder from your friends at CoSIDA that participating in pools of any kind is not permitted, whether there is an entry fee or not. (He probably should have included prize here)
See you in San Diego and enjoy March Madness."
Item D covers this and even if the bracket with no entry fee has a winning prize of a free sub sandwich at an athletic sponsor's sub shop, it's considered illegal and should not involve Staff members of the athletics department of a member institution and student-athletes.
NCAA Bylaw 10.3 Gambling Activities
Staff members of the athletics department of a member institution and student-athletes shall not knowingly:
Check out this article, pretty interesting read.
Here is a solution to your boxscores for next spring
Have fun entering the boxscores, that was something I never enjoyed for our teams trips to Florida. But now I don't have to worry anymore, the first year I had them fax me the scorebook sheets after each day and but now I have trained one of the baseball and softball lightly-used players to keep StatCrew on the computer and they just email me the game file after the game when they get back to the hotel.
Back to the essence of this whole message board
Again, when you stop hiding behind your veil, then I would love to talk with you more about your thoughts on all of the topics and try to develop a plan of how both you and I and the others can help further CoSIDA in the areas you and everyone else address on here. Yes, I am guilty of hiding behind anonymous as well, but don't feel it's fair for me to open up to everyone if no one else is willing to do the same.
However, throwing stones at such topics as the NCAA Rule on March Madness Brackets, that was intended to help others understand the rules, especially with the changing structure of CoSIDA's membership namely more and more youth entering this profession that may not be aware of such rules.
The reasons I respect the board so much, is that I am close friends with three of the small school SIDs that are on the board and I know their passion to help further our cause. But, you continue to blindly dismiss their efforts and attack the allies they have developed namely the President and other high-ranking CoSIDA board staff, who according to these DIII SIDs, are very cognisant of the DIII SIDs since we are the largest group in the NCAA. My friends said they are even looking at developing more and more portions of the CoSIDA convention to be geared towards us.
I only have one question, do you attend the CoSIDA convention? If yes, do you bring up any of the information you talk about on this board so passionately to the board members while you are there. The same goes out to every other person on here. Also, don't use your school doesn't have enough money, I have only had one year where I didn't have to pay for the trip myself and in fact have driven with friends to sites in the past to cut down on costs.
If you choose not to go, then let's do like the NCAA did a number of years ago by stealing schools away from the NAIA. Now, let's do this by stealing away members from CoSIDA, call it Athletic Communications Society of America(ACSA) and join forces with the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and form our own standards and processes that help to further our cause.
Hope this makes you feel better about my thoughts and know that I am on your team.
If I may, let me reply to your post. I took it a bit out of order.
“However, I really don't see this happening because you are just like the people you perceive those on the CoSIDA board to be as you say afraid to make change or do anything to rock the boat because it will ruin their pension.”
I am just like the people on the board, except for the fact that I think CoSIDA is flawed and needs to be improved. I also think that Athletics Communications professionals need to do a better job of promoting ourselves, and I am here to discuss the subject, rather than talking about how wonderful our Academic AA process is, etc.
“Remember that fact that you write without stating your names, YOU ARE NO BETTER!”
You want to know my name? Ask me. I never claimed to better than anybody. Who knows, we may already know each other.
“ALSO, YOU ARE WRONG! These measures of change you want to see, take time to move forward.”
I don’t think anybody has said that these changes wouldn’t take time. This is all a gradual evolution. But the problem is that I have seen very few first steps along that long road. You mentioned the establishment of the position of executive director, and that is potentially a very, very positive first step. Now, the biggest challenge is that the ED will have to be somebody with the power and vision to direct change. I am a little sad that it had to read the 6pt minutes of the conference calls in the magazine to learn about this possibility.
But you are right. We are at a crossroads. However, with every crossroads, you have the opportunity to continue on the same path that you were on before. We are hoping that this is not the case.
“I am sure you know that these people on the board do there jobs on a volunteer basis, while they are tending to their daily duties of Sports Information Professionals. Think if you devoted time to this position, how you would manage? Have you asked any of the board members you know even at the smallest levels what they do and how they manage to put in time to their CoSIDA responsibilities?”
I have not been on the executive board. I had been on a committee several years ago, but left it because it was frustrating and not rewarding. I have known several people on committees and a one who was on the board. That individual left the board in frustration and disgust. I have heard several stories though that present a picture that is less than flattering.
Believe me, I have the utmost respect for you (presuming you are or have been on the board or on the committee) for your time commitment to CoSIDA. In fact, thank you for your efforts.
“You have a voice, but you choose to waste your time posting here instead of going to the source, the CoSIDA board. What are you so afraid of and why do you hide behind your veils here on this board? … Bring your ideas and voice to the level where it matters, preaching to those who agree with you is liberating, stress relieving, validating, but it does nothing to help further your cause.”
I have a voice. But one voice is not as powerful as many. I came here to ask others what changes they would like to see so that we could stand as a group and express our opinions. If I choose to speak to the board in San Diego, I will not be wearing a veil. MLK, Gandhi, and those who attempted to affect change did not stand alone, and they had quiet meetings to form their opinions and strategies. Well, consider yourself in the middle of the DSID organizing meeting.
Why do I hide behind a pseudonym? Because I value my pension just like everybody else. I am afraid that something I might write might rub someone the wrong way in this incestuous business. And as we tell our student-athletes, everything that is put on the internet is on there forever. Hence, my handle.
“In my eyes, you are stating the obvious areas that SIDs want to have changed for years, but the CoSIDA board needs to hear this from real people….”
And they will, if there are enough of us to warrant addressing it. But you just made my point, Mr. Anonymous. If these are problems that SIDS have wanted to change for years, WHY ARE THEY STILL PROBLEMS AND WHY HAVEN’T THEY BEEN CHANGED YET? The answer is that the board has not addressed them. And that is a shame. Twice I have addressed the board, once in person and once via correspondence, and both times my cause has been rejected. You may think this is a case of sour grapes. It is not. I didn’t get what I hoped for on the last two cases, but it is not going to stop me from trying again.
Again, I respect the time commitment of everybody on the board, but I am frustrated with the lack of progress in our business. I am frustrated that we are considered the “Toy Department” of the athletics department. I am frustrated that a group of very intellegent and very creative individuals who are not recognized for their efforts at the level they deserve. I am frustrated that a group of professionals who are specialists in promotion are failing in promoting themselves, while the athletic trainers are doing a fantastic job in promoting themselves. The CoSIDA board should be at the forefront of our cause, leading the way, but they are not.
And now, for desert…..
“The same goes for the NCAA Bylaw and that's what you must abide by if your school is affiliated with NCAA. If you don't like it, you have the freedom that our country is blessed with, to choose another workplace or lobby against the Bylaw you don't like.”
You are right, we have the right to lobby against the bylaw. But the NCAA doesn’t like to address the whole problem, do they? No sports wagering, but no mention of other types of wagering and detrimental effects they can have on people. Meanwhile, let’s make sure we ban fantasy sports too. Poker? OK. Horse racing? OK. Fantasy football with a few friends for 20 bucks a pop? Lose your job. But really, this isn’t the major point of your post and is for a discussion of another day.
You bring up other points in your other post, but I don’t need to address those. Incidentally, if you plan on regularly participating with us, could you give yourself a handle? You can use your name, or be dissenting guy, or whatever, but anybody can use “anonymous”, and that is not fair to yourself.
Have a nice day.
BuddhistSID or should I call you Phil Jackson.
I am not on the board, but as I said I know people on the board and know what they do as a board member in speaking with them about their experiences.
How do I go about getting a handle? As I said, I am trying to help, maybe it would be worth the members of the board or the handled posters holding a meeting at CoSIDA this year.
I would rather try to make the organization that is celebrating 50 years (I think this year?) a better organization than forming our own organization. However, if as you say for years you have been trying and I might have the wool pulled over my eyes as to what I have heard or know about the product of change within CoSIDA, then we might need to try to organize our own organization which is truly run by its constituents and not people resistent to helping our organization improve or with a DI-only mentality.
Give me your thoughts and SIDwho, hope you understand I am on your team.
Anonymous-
Just click other and fill in your name. People can fake it unless you are one of the bloggers, but at least we can generally identify you.
Hey blog owners, it might be time to start a new topic on this subject.
Incidentally, I am a DI guy who has worked at every level, III, II and I.
Want the ability to post new blog topics? Email disgruntledsid@yahoo.com!
CoSIDA board needs to hear this from real people, not the anonymous, the SID Vicious, the sid who, sidude and BuddhistSID's of the world.
1. I assure you I am a real person.
but if it's done professionally and through the proper channels, your job will not be in jeopardy, you might actually be surprised it might land you on the board of the CoSIDA you have such strong views against.
2. Who says we aren't going that route as well?
While I only know with any degree of certainty the identities of three posters here, I know where they stand and what direction they would like to take things - I also know what some of them are actively doing to facilitate the change inside and outside of the organization. If the burr we put under the saddle makes the horse run faster, so be it. If it slows it down, it needs a new rider.
I have no desire to serve on the board. I do have the desire to not kill time on this web site while waiting for results to come in.
In a better sid world, I wouldn't be exhausted to the point that being awake at 10 pm feels obscene given the past few days. I know that if I hop on the couch with a Smithwicks and pop on my TiVo'd 24 to watch Jack Bauer save America again despite the annual internal leak at CTU, I'll be dead asleep before the email gets here, and will spend my morning answering angry parent emails for not having the scores up within 25 seconds of the final horn.
3. Maybe we should discuss when 24 jumped the shark.
4. What is the obsession with knowing the messenger?
First, my previous topic addressed exactly what happened on the open discussion. I still praise Phil Ticknor's efforts - I think it's good people are talking, but it sat idle for three months while everyone railed on about statcrew fixes. How about real quality of life fixes? Why can't that discussion survive openly?
Second, what difference does it honestly make to the message?
No one has really articulated an answer to this question, nor did anyone ever claim superiority.
My complaint about CoSIDA's never in any way welcoming me, or steeping in its procedures, or outlinging procedures, or telling me there are procedures, or who my reps are or what they do is the same on here as it is in frank discussions with SIDs face to face.
I sent a check and was left on an island. With more sports than I had years on the earth, I didn't have time to go running down an organization that had no interest in me other than me having to write a check, and asking me to volunteer for a committee that meant more work.
Knowing who I am doesn't change the fact.
Not knowing who I am doesn't mean the organization shouldn't strive to prevent it from happening again.
Finishing a thought...
I have no desire to serve on the board. I do have the desire to not kill time on this web site while waiting for results to come in.
In a better sid world, I wouldn't be exhausted to the point that being awake at 10 pm feels obscene given the past few days.
The point was, if I wasn't tired, and tired of being tired, I wouldn't be on here. If I had help, I would be less tired, and there would be a 50/50 chance of it being my night to wait for the late games!
My tired brain would rather be on the couch snoring instead of being sidetracked mid-thought thinking about it.
Sid Vicious -
As a participant in the statcrew discussion, I will say that that discussion was very valuable and helped improve their product.
What kind of sediments? Gravel, sand? I agree their are issues that need to be addressed, but who is the spokesman for the SID at the Division I, II, III, NAIA, conference and community college levels? Go to the convention and see who shows up and what is accomplished at the convention. ECAC-SIDA is only drinking, and CoSIDA is close to the same. I was in the business for a long time, but the hours, pay and some of the people I dealt with drove me out to another area of athletic business. Until the life isses are addressed for SIDs, talking about StatCrew and CoSIDA room reservations is meaningless.
Many people have found the SID Board useful and I am pleasantly surprised at its success.
The state of our profession is that there are a lot of young and/or untrained people in the business - anything they can learn from the SID Board is a step in the right direction. I know getting a game file that has a dozen errors in it from a part-time SID who is trying hard but has been put into a position he or she is not ready for does not improve my quality of life. Working with people who know what they're doing does. If the SID Board helps make it happen, I say great! And if it helps me find ways to do my job better and more efficiently (another way to improve quality of life), that is even better!
Don't get me wrong, this blog is important and the issues NEED to be addressed. I just don't understand this BOARD v. BLOG mentality when myself and the originators of this blog have no problems with each other nor the missions of our blog or board. They are two DIFFERENT ways for SIDs to connect and serve two distinct purposes (although, as I demonstrated above, those purposes can intertwine).
Phil-
I believe the board vs. blog mentality, as you call it, stems from your rules on the site. Essentially, your rules state that there be no negative discussion of CoSIDA on the web site.
To quote:
"If you have a concern about CoSIDA, please express it tactfully and with an open mind. Remember that the members of the CoSIDA board are sports information professionals and should be able to post here without feeling like their effort is being questioned. Having CoSIDA board members participate in this forum is a great opportunity for communication between the board and the membership; let's not discourage them from participating."
Essentially, you are telling your participants that while discussion is permitted, no dissent will be tolerated under the guise of keeping things nice and happy for any members of the board who might happen to be posting.
I think that we all agree that a blatant bitch-fest is not practical, there is much to be discussed, and I think your forum would be a suitable and useful place to continue the discussion on the record.
BuddhistSID,
"If you have a concern about CoSIDA, please express it tactfully and with an open mind. "
Where do my terms of use state that you cannot state a concern? I only ask that it is expressed "tactfully and with an open mind."
It's just as much about encouraging people to share who they are and protecting the mission of this blog as it is about encouraging board members to engage in discussion. The SID Board has some folks who state who they are in their usernames and/or signatures; others have blank profiles and are somewhat anonymous. If I open the forum up to umitigated complaining, those who choose to remain anonymous are more likely to do so for the very valid reasons that have been stated on this blog (fear of professional repercussions). If The SID Board becomes a haven mostly for anonymous posters, it enters direct competition with this blog - something I didn't want to do from the very start. The terms of use were expressly designed to make The SID Board as distinct as it could be from D-SID so that it would not be seen as "competition."
For the most part, people seem to get the differences in the two online forums. As non-specific as the terms of use are (what qualifies as "tactfully" and "with an open mind" is open to some interpretation), I've had to delete just ONE post since the board's origination and that was not a criticism on CoSIDA or a CoSIDA board member, but a post that I felt was too much of a personal attack on another poster. I don't think that was overstepping any bounds - in the early days of D-SID, a comment was deleted that called out another SID by name and seemed to be more of a personal attack than anything else.
If you're a registered user of The SID Board, you might also want to check out this discussion: http://sid.s10.forumsplace.com/viewtopic.php?t=92. I was concerned about it at first (mostly because of the thread title), but it ended up being very engaging and respectful. I certainly am not opposed to seeing another thread like it.
Phil T.
I did look it over and was impressed. I had missed that posting in. I honestly thought that anything disparaging CoSIDA would be promptly deleted. I too would like to see further discussions on the board so that the higher-ups in CoSIDA will listen.

Good day, sun shines!
There have were times of hardship when I didn't know about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright stupid person.
I have never thought that there weren't any need in large initial investment.
Nowadays, I'm happy and lucky , I started to get real income.
It gets down to select a correct partner who utilizes your money in a right way - that is incorporate it in real deals, parts and divides the income with me.
You can ask, if there are such firms? I'm obliged to answer the truth, YES, there are. Please get to know about one of them:

Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at here. There is such a thing, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of ponzy-like structure, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.
For several years , I earn money with the help of these programs.
I don't have problems with money now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I make 2G daily, and my first investment was 500 dollars only.
Right now, I managed to catch a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Turn to my web site to get additional info.

straightener just to see if I'd actually use one if I had it, I finally stopped wanting to fry my hair, and decided to upgrade. I picked this one out because of the long titanium plates, and because I'd
heard an alarming amount of bad things about the Chi flat irons. I have been so happy with this straightener. My hair is super straight, smooth, and shiny. I've gotten so many compliments on my hair since
using it. It's glides right through my thick, stubborn, wavy hair. One stroke usually gets it perfect, some extremely stubborn parts take two. It's so easy and fast to use. I've got so much hair (a
hairdresser once called me "Mufasa", if that's any indication), and I'm done in about 15 minutes.
My daughter has had
this for almost 3 months now and is very pleased with it. It heats rapidly and her hair doesn't look dry after using it. It doesn't seem to have the "cord" issues that she had with her chi.
